The Kingdom of Heaven: The Best Treasure Ever!

Lesson Overview

Topic: Exploring the Parable of the Hidden Treasure (Matthew 13:44)

Target Age: 6 years old

Key Verse: "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field." — Matthew 13:44a

Learning Objectives

  • I can explain that the "Kingdom of Heaven" is God’s love and being part of His family.
  • I can describe why the man in the story was willing to sell everything for the treasure.
  • I can identify things that make God's Kingdom more valuable than toys or money.

Materials Needed

  • A Bible (or a Children’s Storybook Bible)
  • A small box or "treasure chest"
  • Gold coins (chocolate, plastic, or circles cut from yellow paper)
  • A piece of paper and a brown crayon (to make a "treasure map")
  • Art supplies: Markers, stickers, glitter, glue
  • A small treat or sticker hidden inside the treasure chest

1. The Hook: The Mystery Box (5-10 Minutes)

Activity: Before the lesson begins, hide the "treasure chest" somewhere in the room. Give the student a simple one-step "treasure map" or oral clues to find it.

Talking Points:

  • "How did it feel when you were looking for the box? Were you excited?"
  • "When you opened it and saw what was inside, did you feel happy?"
  • "Today, we are going to learn about a treasure that is better than gold, better than toys, and better than ice cream!"

2. I Do: The Story (10 Minutes)

Instruction: Read Matthew 13:44. "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field."

The Explanation (6-Year-Old Friendly):

  • The Discovery: Imagine a man walking through a dusty field. Suddenly—clink!—his foot hits something hard. He digs it up and finds a chest full of gold!
  • The Choice: The man wanted that treasure so much that he went home and sold his house, his bed, and his favorite clothes just so he could buy the field and keep the treasure.
  • The "What is it?": The "Kingdom of Heaven" isn't a box of gold coins. It’s knowing God, feeling His love, and being His friend forever. That is the best treasure in the whole world!

3. We Do: Value Comparison (10 Minutes)

Interactive Discussion: Place a pile of toys or "Earthly Treasures" on one side and the "God’s Kingdom Treasure Chest" on the other.

The Game: "Which lasts longer?"

  • Ask: "If you have a toy, can it break?" (Yes) "Does God's love ever break?" (No!)
  • Ask: "If you have a candy bar, does it disappear when you eat it?" (Yes) "Does God’s kindness ever run out?" (No!)
  • Conclusion: We realize that God's Kingdom is the "Greatest Treasure" because it lasts forever and makes our hearts happier than anything else.

4. You Do: The Treasure Map Craft (15-20 Minutes)

Activity: The student will create their own "Kingdom Treasure Map."

  1. Take a piece of paper and crinkle it up to make it look "old."
  2. In the center, draw a large heart or a cross to represent God’s Kingdom.
  3. Around the "Treasure," draw or write things we find in God's Kingdom (e.g., Joy, Love, Peace, Friends, Kindness).
  4. Decorate the map with "gold" (yellow markers or stickers).

Success Criteria: The student can explain that the "X" on their map represents God's love/The Kingdom of Heaven.

5. Conclusion & Recap (5 Minutes)

Summary: "The man in the Bible was so happy to find the treasure. We can be happy too because we know God! He is our greatest treasure."

Quick Check:

  • Where was the treasure hidden in the story? (In a field)
  • What did the man do to get the treasure? (He sold everything he had with joy)
  • What is the real treasure we are looking for? (God/The Kingdom of Heaven)

Closing Prayer/Thought: "Thank you, God, for being the best treasure. Help us to love you more than anything else. Amen."

Differentiation & Adaptations

  • For Advanced Learners: Ask them to draw a comic strip of the man selling his items and buying the field to show the "sequence" of the story.
  • For Active/Kinesthetic Learners: Act out the story! Let the student "dig" in a sandbox or a pile of blankets to find the hidden chest.
  • For Visual Learners: Use a real scale or balance. Put a toy on one side and a Bible/Heart on the other to show which one is "heavier" (more important).

Assessment

Formative: Observe the child’s participation during the "Which lasts longer?" game.

Summative: At the end of the day, ask the child: "If someone asked you why God's Kingdom is like a treasure, what would you tell them?" (Looking for answers related to value, joy, or lasting forever).
