Fruitopia: Growing Love, Kindness, and Goodness

Lesson Overview

Subject: Character Development / Social-Emotional Learning

Theme: Exploring the "Fruits of the Spirit" from Galatians 5:22 (Love, Kindness, and Goodness).

Target Age: 7 Years Old

Duration: 45–60 minutes

Materials Needed

  • A piece of real fruit (an apple or orange works well)
  • Paper and colorful markers/crayons
  • Scissors and glue
  • "Fruitopia Scenarios" (included in the lesson)
  • Small stickers (optional)
  • A bowl or basket

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to:

  • Define Love, Kindness, and Goodness in their own words.
  • Identify these three traits in everyday situations.
  • Create a "Fruitopia Garden" representing how they will practice these traits this week.

Success Criteria

  • I can explain that Love means putting others first.
  • I can give an example of being Kind.
  • I can describe "Goodness" as doing the right thing even when no one is looking.

1. Introduction: The Hook (5-10 minutes)

The Secret of the Seed: Hold up a piece of fruit. Ask the student: "If I wanted to grow an apple tree, what would I need to plant?" (Wait for answer: A seed!).

Talking Points: "Just like a garden grows delicious fruit, our hearts are like a garden. In the book of Galatians (5:22), it tells us that when we are connected to what is good, our lives start to grow 'fruit' too! But this isn't fruit you eat with your mouth—it’s fruit people feel with their hearts. Today, we are visiting Fruitopia to learn about the first three: Love, Kindness, and Goodness."

2. Body: The "I Do, We Do, You Do" Model (30 minutes)

I Do: Defining the Fruit (Direct Instruction)

Explain the three "fruits" using simple definitions:

  • Love (The Strawberry): Love isn't just a feeling; it's a choice to be happy for someone else and help them, even if it’s hard. Example: Giving your sibling the bigger half of a cookie.
  • Kindness (The Banana): Kindness is being a "helper." It’s using soft words and being gentle with people’s feelings. Example: Inviting someone who is lonely to play.
  • Goodness (The Grapes): Goodness is like a light. it means doing what is right because it’s right, not just to get a reward. Example: Cleaning up a mess you didn't make.

We Do: The "Fruitopia Sort" (Guided Practice)

Read the following scenarios aloud. Ask the student to decide if the person is showing Love, Kindness, or Goodness (some might be all three!).

  1. "Charlie sees his mom carrying heavy bags and opens the door for her." (Kindness/Love)
  2. "Maya finds a cool toy on the playground. Instead of keeping it, she takes it to the teacher." (Goodness)
  3. "Leo’s friend is sad because he lost his race. Leo gives him a big hug and tells him he did a great job." (Love/Kindness)

Check for Understanding: Ask, "How would Fruitopia look if everyone forgot to be kind today?"

You Do: The Fruitopia Garden Map (Independent Practice)

Activity: Ask the student to draw three large fruits on a piece of paper (a Strawberry, a Banana, and a bunch of Grapes).

  • Inside the Strawberry (Love), have them draw or write one person they want to show extra love to this week.
  • Inside the Banana (Kindness), have them draw one kind thing they can do for a neighbor or friend.
  • Inside the Grapes (Goodness), have them write one "good" choice they can make at home (like making their bed without being asked).

Encourage them to decorate the background to look like a beautiful garden.

3. Conclusion: Closure & Recap (5-10 minutes)

Summary: "Today we learned that our hearts are like gardens. When we choose Love, Kindness, and Goodness, we make the world a sweeter place—just like Fruitopia!"

Recap Question: "If you could only pick one fruit to practice today, which one would it be and why?"

The Challenge: Give the student a "Fruit Tracker" (a simple sheet with three circles). Every time they catch themselves showing Love, Kindness, or Goodness this week, they get to put a sticker in a circle.

Assessment

  • Formative: Observation during the "Fruitopia Sort" scenarios to see if the student correctly identifies the traits.
  • Summative: Completion of the "Garden Map" with realistic, actionable examples for each trait.

Adaptability & Differentiation

  • For the Struggling Learner: Provide pre-drawn fruit shapes to color and have the student dictate their ideas while you write them down. Use puppets to act out the scenarios.
  • For the Advanced Learner: Ask them to write a "Fruitopia Constitution"—3 rules that everyone in Fruitopia must follow based on Love, Kindness, and Goodness.
  • Multi-Sensory Option: Make a "Fruitopia Fruit Salad." As you cut each fruit, discuss the trait it represents and name someone who shows that trait.
