Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand various concepts related to Earth Science, including the different layers of the Earth, types of rocks, and the water cycle.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Colored pencils or markers
- A small rock or pebble
- A clear plastic cup
- A small amount of soil or sand
- A small container with water
- A heat source (such as a stove or a microwave)
- A globe or a world map
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Draw and label the layers of the Earth: core, mantle, and crust. Use different colors to represent each layer.
- Examine the rock or pebble you collected. Describe its color, texture, and shape. Draw a picture of it.
- Create a mini water cycle: Place a small amount of soil or sand in the bottom of the clear plastic cup. Add a little water to the cup. Cover the cup with plastic wrap and secure it with a rubber band. Place the cup near a heat source for a few minutes. Observe the condensation forming on the plastic wrap and the water droplets dripping back into the cup.
- Locate different continents and oceans on a globe or a world map. Use different colors to mark them.
First Grade Talking Points
- "The Earth has different layers. The core is like the Earth's hot center, the mantle is a layer of hot rock, and the crust is the Earth's outer layer that we live on."
- "Rocks can be different colors, shapes, and sizes. They can feel rough, smooth, or bumpy. Some rocks are hard, and some are soft."
- "The water cycle is how water moves around the Earth. When the sun heats up water, it turns into vapor or steam. The vapor rises into the sky and forms clouds. When the clouds get heavy, they release water droplets, which fall back to the ground as rain, snow, or hail."
- "Continents are large pieces of land on Earth. Oceans are very big bodies of saltwater. Can you name some continents and oceans?"
