Super Shield: Becoming a Germ Fighter!

Lesson Overview

Subject: Health & Hygiene

Target Age: 5 Years Old

Duration: 1 Hour

Learning Objectives: By the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain that germs are tiny "invisible" living things that can make us feel sick.
  • Demonstrate the 5-step handwashing technique for the correct amount of time (20 seconds).
  • Identify "High-Five Habits" for staying healthy, such as sneezing into an elbow and not sharing water bottles.

Materials Needed

  • Hand lotion
  • Glitter (any color) or flour (if glitter is not preferred)
  • A sink with warm water and soap
  • Paper towels
  • Paper plates and markers
  • "Germ Fighter" stickers or a printed badge
  • A small spray bottle with water

1. Introduction: The Sneaky Germ Story (10 Minutes)

The Hook: Start by asking: "Have you ever seen something that was there, but you couldn't see it? Like the wind?" Wait for an answer. "Today, we are going to learn about 'Germs.' They are tiny, invisible explorers that love to hop from hands to toys to noses!"

The Objective: "Today, we are going to become Germ Fighters! We will learn how germs travel and how we can use our 'Super Shields' to keep them away so we stay strong and healthy."

Talking Points:

  • Germs are so small you need a super-powered microscope to see them.
  • Most germs are okay, but some are "sneaky" and make us cough or get a runny nose.
  • We are the bosses of our bodies, and we can stop the sneaky germs!

2. Body: How Germs Travel (I Do / We Do) (15 Minutes)

The "Glitter Germ" Experiment:

  • I Do: Put a small dab of lotion on your hands and sprinkle a little glitter on them. Tell the learner, "Pretend this glitter is a bunch of sneaky germs." Rub your hands together so the glitter spreads.
  • We Do: Give the learner a high-five or shake their hand. Have them look at their hands. "Oh no! The glitter jumped to you!"
  • Exploration: Ask the learner to touch a toy or a doorknob. Show them how the glitter (germs) stays behind on everything they touch.
  • The Spray Test: Use a spray bottle to lightly mist the air near a paper plate. "When we sneeze without covering our mouths, germs fly through the air just like this water mist!"

3. Guided Practice: The Great Wash-Off (We Do) (15 Minutes)

The 20-Second Song: Explain that water alone doesn't get rid of "sticky" germs. We need soap and a song!

The Steps:

  1. Wet: Get hands wet under the water.
  2. Soap: Get one big pump of soap.
  3. Scrub: This is the most important part! Scrub the fronts, the backs, and between the fingers.
Activity: Sing "Happy Birthday" twice or the "ABCs" once while scrubbing the glitter off.
  4. Rinse: Wash all the bubbles (and the glitter germs) down the drain. "Bye-bye, germs!"
  5. Dry: Use a clean paper towel to dry off.

Success Criteria: The learner is successful if all the glitter is gone from their hands and they scrubbed for the full duration of the song.

4. Independent Practice: The Germ Fighter Shield (You Do) (15 Minutes)

Creative Activity: Give the learner a paper plate or a piece of cardstock cut into a shield shape.

  • Ask the learner to draw a "Super Shield" that shows them staying healthy.
  • Encourage them to draw their "High-Five Habits":
    1. Washing hands with soap.
    2. The "Vampire Sneeze" (sneezing into the elbow).
    3. Using a tissue for runny noses.
    4. Eating colorful fruits and veggies to stay strong.
    5. Getting lots of "super-power sleep."

Differentiation:
For learners needing support: Provide pre-drawn icons of a soap bottle and a tissue for them to color.
For advanced learners: Ask them to write the words "Soap" and "Wash" on their shield.

5. Conclusion: Recap and Graduation (5 Minutes)

Tell them what you taught: "Today we learned that germs are tiny and invisible, but we have the power to stop them! We learned that washing our hands with soap for 20 seconds is like a magic trick to make germs disappear."

Final Check: Ask the learner:

  1. "Where do we sneeze if we don't have a tissue?" (Expected: Into the elbow/Vampire cape).
  2. "How long do we scrub our hands with soap?" (Expected: 20 seconds or "The ABC song").

Celebration: Award the learner a "Certified Germ Fighter" sticker or badge. Tell them they are now in charge of keeping the "Sneaky Germs" out of the house!

Assessment Methods

  • Formative: Observation during the glitter activity to see if the child understands how germs spread through touch.
  • Summative: The "Wash-Off" performance where the child must demonstrate all 5 steps of handwashing independently.
