Super Sam: The Sanitation Superhero

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, young learners will explore the world of sanitation. They will learn how we keep our bodies and our environments clean, understand the role of sanitation workers (community heroes), and practice sorting items into trash and recycling.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Explain that "sanitation" means keeping things clean to stay healthy.
  • Identify the difference between a trash bin and a recycling bin.
  • Demonstrate the proper way to wash hands to remove "invisible" germs.
  • Categorize three common household items as either trash or recycling.

Materials Needed

  • Hand lotion and loose glitter (or colorful chalk dust)
  • Two bins (one labeled with a "Recycle" symbol, one labeled "Trash")
  • A collection of "clean" trash: empty plastic bottles, paper scraps, cardboard boxes, and non-recyclable items like snack wrappers or used tissues
  • Soap and water
  • Optional: Toy trash truck or pictures of sanitation workers
  • Crayons and a "Sanitation Superhero" badge (drawn on paper)

1. Introduction: The Invisible Germs (10 Minutes)

The Hook: Ask the student, "Have you ever seen a germ?" Explain that germs are tiny monsters that like to hide on our hands.

Interactive Demonstration (I Do/We Do):

  • Put a small pea-sized amount of lotion on the student’s hands and ask them to rub it in.
  • Sprinkle a little glitter (the "germs") on their hands. Have them clap their hands together.
  • Ask the student to try to shake the "germs" off. Do they come off? (No!)
  • Talking Point: "Look how those germs stick! Sanitation means we use our superpowers—like soap and water—to wash those germs away so we don't get sick."
  • Go to the sink and practice washing the glitter off together while singing "Happy Birthday" or the "ABC Song."

2. Body: The Sorting Superheroes (30 Minutes)

Step 1: Meet the Helpers (I Do)

  • Show a picture of a sanitation worker or a toy trash truck.
  • Talking Point: "Sanitation workers are superheroes! They help keep our whole city clean. If they didn't pick up the trash, our streets would be smelly and messy. Today, you are an apprentice sanitation worker!"

Step 2: The Sorting Game (We Do)

  • Place the "Trash" bin and the "Recycle" bin in the center of the room.
  • Show the student a plastic bottle. "This is plastic. It can be turned into something new! Does it go in the trash or the magic recycling bin?"
  • Show a messy snack wrapper. "This is too crinkly and dirty to be made into something new. It goes in the trash bin."
  • Model sorting one of each item clearly.

Step 3: Sanitation Relay (You Do)

  • Scatter the "clean" trash items across the floor.
  • Tell the student: "Oh no! The neighborhood is messy! We need to clean it up before the timer runs out."
  • Have the student run to pick up one item at a time and decide which bin it belongs in.
  • Provide verbal encouragement: "Great job! That cardboard is definitely a recyclable!"

3. Application: Design Your Sanitation Badge (10 Minutes)

Creative Practice:

  • Give the student a paper circle (their "Badge").
  • Ask them to draw one thing they learned today (e.g., a trash truck, a soap bubble, or a recycling sign).
  • Tape the badge to their shirt and declare them an official "Sanitation Superhero."

4. Conclusion: Wrap-Up & Recap (10 Minutes)

Summary:

  • Ask the student: "Why do we keep our hands and our rooms clean?" (To stay healthy/happy).
  • Ask: "Where does paper go when we are done with it?" (The recycling bin).
  • Final Affirmation: "You did a wonderful job today. Because of you, our 'neighborhood' is safe and clean!"

Success Criteria

The lesson is successful if the student:

  • Successfully washes the "glitter germs" off their hands.
  • Places at least 4 out of 5 items in the correct bin during the relay.
  • Can state that sanitation workers help keep the community clean.

Differentiation Options

  • For Advanced Learners: Introduce a third bin for "Compost" and explain how food scraps turn into dirt for plants.
  • For Struggling Learners: Focus only on one bin at a time. Have them find all the "blue" recycling items first before moving to trash.
  • Kinesthetic Focus: Use a toy trash truck to physically "drive" the items to the bins.

Assessment Methods

  • Formative: Observe the student during the "Sorting Relay" to see if they understand the categories.
  • Summative: Ask the student to explain to a family member or a stuffed animal what a "Sanitation Superhero" does.
