The Hundred-Step Adventure: Counting to 100

Lesson Overview

Duration: 10 Minutes

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to count by 10s to 100.
  • Students will understand that 100 is made up of ten groups of 10.
  • Students will identify the "pattern" in the decade numbers (10, 20, 30...).

Materials Needed

  • 10 small containers (cups, bowls, or even circles drawn on paper)
  • 100 small items (Cheerios, LEGO bricks, buttons, or pebbles)
  • A "100 Chart" (a grid showing numbers 1-100)
  • A physical "Reward" (a sticker or a high-five)

1. Introduction: The Number Party (1 Minute)

The Hook: "Did you know that the number 100 is having a giant party today? But to get to the party, we have to travel through the Land of Tens. Counting to 100 one-by-one takes a long time, but we have a secret 'Fast-Pass' called counting by tens!"

Talking Point: "Can you show me 10 fingers? Imagine if we had ten friends all showing their fingers at once. That would be 100 fingers! Let's find out how to get there fast."

2. Body: The "I Do, We Do, You Do" Model (7 Minutes)

I Do: The Teacher's Demo (2 Minutes)

Instruction: Place 10 cups in a row. Put 10 items into the first cup while counting quickly: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10!"

Talking Point: "Look! This cup is full with ten friends. If I fill all these cups, we reach 100. Watch how I count them: 10, 20, 30... it sounds like the numbers are singing! Notice how almost all of them end in the word 'ty'—that's our secret code for a group of ten."

We Do: The 10-Step Dance (3 Minutes)

Instruction: Stand up! We are going to march to 100. For every 10, we do a big jump and shout the number.

  • 10: Clap hands!
  • 20: Touch toes!
  • 30: Spin around!
  • (Continue patterns through 90...)
  • 100: Hands in the air and shout "ONE HUNDRED!"

Check for Understanding: "Wait! If I have 4 groups of ten, is that 40 or 50? Let's check our 100 chart!"

You Do: The Fast-Fill Challenge (2 Minutes)

Instruction: Give the learner the remaining items. Ask them to point to the numbers on the 100 chart as you say them, or have them place the last "group of 10" into the 100th spot.

Talking Point: "You are the conductor of the Number Train! Can you point to 50? Now move your finger down... what comes after 50 when we count by tens? That's right, 60!"

3. Conclusion: The Grand Arrival (2 Minutes)

Recap: "We made it to the 100 Party! We learned that 100 is just 10 groups of 10. It’s like a team of numbers working together."

Success Criteria: Ask the student: "Can you count by tens to 100 one last time for your victory lap?"

The "Cool Down": Have the student "blast off" by counting backward from 30 by tens (30, 20, 10, 0!) to sit back down.

Assessment & Feedback

Formative Assessment: Observe if the student can follow the rhythm of the "10-Step Dance" without skipping numbers.

Summative Assessment: Can the student point to "80" on a 100-chart when asked?

Adaptations

  • For Advanced Learners: Ask them to count by 10s starting from a different number (e.g., "Can you count by tens starting at 5? 5, 15, 25...").
  • For Struggling Learners: Focus only on 10 through 50 first. Use a visual number line where the "tens" are colored differently (e.g., all tens are red).
  • In a Classroom: Give each student 10 items and have them come to the front one by one to build the 100 together.
