The Germ Busters: Catch It, Cover It, Stop the Spread!
Lesson Overview
Target Age: 4 Years Old
Duration: 60 Minutes
Topic: Basic hygiene and infectious disease control (respiratory etiquette and handwashing).
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to:
- Identify that "germs" are tiny things that can make us feel sick.
- Demonstrate how to "Catch" a sneeze in a tissue.
- Demonstrate how to "Cover" a cough using the elbow (the "Dracula Sneeze").
- Perform a proper 20-second handwash to "Stop the Spread."
Materials Needed
- Washable glitter (or flour if glitter is unavailable)
- Hand lotion
- A small spray bottle filled with water
- A box of tissues
- A trash can
- Soap and a sink
- "Germ Buster" stickers or a hand-drawn badge
- Paper and crayons
1. Introduction: The Invisible Ninja (10 Minutes)
The Hook: Ask the student, "Have you ever seen a tiny ninja? Germs are like tiny, invisible ninjas that jump from person to person. They are so small we can't see them, but they can make us feel sleepy or give us a rumbly tummy!"
The Glitter Germ Experiment (Visualizing Germs):
- I Do: Put a small pea-sized amount of lotion on the student's hands and sprinkle a little glitter on top. "Let's pretend this glitter is a bunch of germs."
- We Do: Have the student shake your hand or touch a toy. Point out how the "germs" (glitter) moved from their hand to yours or the toy.
- Discussion: "Wow! See how fast those germs traveled? If we don't catch them, they go everywhere!"
2. Body: Catch It and Cover It (20 Minutes)
Step 1: The Sneeze Spray (How Germs Travel)
- Use the spray bottle filled with water. Mist the air in front of the student (not at their face).
- Talk About It: "When we sneeze without covering, our germs fly out like this mist! They land on our toys, our friends, and our snacks."
Step 2: "Catch It" (The Tissue Method)
- I Do: Hold a tissue over your nose and mouth and pretend to sneeze ("A-choo!"). Immediately crumple the tissue and put it in the bin.
- We Do: Give the student a tissue. Practice the "Catch It" move together.
- Instruction: "If you feel a sneeze coming, grab a tissue fast! Catch it, then toss it in the trash can so the germs stay in the bin."
Step 3: "Cover It" (The Dracula Sneeze)
- I Do: "What if we don't have a tissue? We use our 'Dracula Cape'!" Demonstrate sneezing into the crook of your elbow.
- We Do: Have the student practice the "Dracula Sneeze."
- Instruction: "Dab like a superhero or hide like Dracula! Sneeze into your arm, not your hands."
3. Active Practice: Stop the Spread (15 Minutes)
The Handwashing Hero Challenge:
- Go to the sink. The goal is to get all the "Glitter Germs" off from the beginning of the lesson.
- I Do: Demonstrate wetting hands, applying soap, and scrubbing everywhere (backs of hands, between fingers, under nails).
- We Do: Scrub together while singing the "Germ Buster Song" (to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat):
Wash, wash, wash your hands,
Make them nice and clean.
Under, over, and between,
Scrub the germs away! - Check: Ensure the student scrubs for at least 20 seconds (the length of the song twice).
4. Creative Application & Assessment (10 Minutes)
Activity: Germ Monster Drawing
- Have the student draw a "Germ Monster." Ask them: "What does your germ monster do when you use a tissue?" (Expected answer: It gets caught/goes in the trash).
- Success Criteria: The student can verbally explain the three steps:
- Catch it (Tissue)
- Bin it (Trash)
- Kill it (Wash hands)
5. Conclusion: Graduation (5 Minutes)
- Recap: "Today we learned how to be Germ Busters! We catch sneezes in tissues, we use our Dracula elbows, and we wash our hands to keep our friends and family safe."
- Reward: Present the "Germ Buster" sticker or badge. "You are now an official Germ Buster. Your job is to keep those invisible ninjas away!"
Adaptability & Differentiation
- For More Challenge: Discuss "Touchpoints." Walk around the room and have the student identify things many people touch (doorknobs, light switches) where germs might hide.
- For High Energy: Play "Germ Tag." If the student gets tagged, they have to "wash" their hands (rub them together for 5 seconds) before they can join the game again.
- Sensory Note: If the student dislikes the feeling of lotion/glitter, use a dry method like small pieces of paper or simply use the water spray bottle for all demonstrations.
