Talking to the King: A Journey Through the Lord’s Prayer

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, students will explore the "map" Jesus gave us for talking to God. Rather than just memorizing words, students will discover the meaning behind the phrases and create a tactile tool to help them remember the different parts of prayer.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify: State that the Lord’s Prayer is a guide given by Jesus.
  • Understand: Explain the four main parts of the prayer: Praise, Needs, Forgiveness, and Protection.
  • Create: Build a "Prayer Reminder Tool" (Bracelet or Keychain) to represent the steps of the prayer.

Materials Needed

  • A Bible or a printed copy of Matthew 6:9–13
  • 6 different colored beads (Suggested: Gold/Yellow, Blue, Green, Red, Purple, White)
  • A piece of string, pipe cleaner, or leather cord
  • Paper and markers
  • Scissors and glue

1. Introduction: The Direct Line (The Hook)

The Hook: Ask the student: "If you had a special phone that could call anyone in the whole world—the President, a famous astronaut, or even a King—who would you call? What would you say?"

The Connection: Explain that we have a direct line to the Creator of the Universe! But sometimes, we aren’t sure what to say. Long ago, Jesus’ friends asked him, "How should we talk to God?" Jesus gave them a "map" or a "pattern." We call it The Lord’s Prayer.

2. Body: Breaking Down the Map (I Do / We Do)

Read the prayer aloud slowly. Then, use the following "Kid-Friendly Translation" to explain the five big ideas. For each section, have the student pick a bead to represent that idea.

Part 1: The Address & Praise (The "Hello" and "You're Awesome")

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name..."

  • Meaning: We start by remembering God is our loving Father and he is holy (special).
  • Action: Pick a Gold Bead. Gold reminds us of a King’s crown and that God is the most important.

Part 2: God’s Way (The "Big Dreams")

"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven..."
  • Meaning: We ask for the world to be full of love and kindness, just like heaven is.
  • Action: Pick a Blue Bead. Blue reminds us of the sky/heaven and God’s big plan for the world.

Part 3: Our Daily Needs (The "Daily Bread")

"Give us today our daily bread..."

  • Meaning: We tell God what we need today—like food, a safe house, or help with schoolwork.
  • Action: Pick a Green Bead. Green reminds us of things that grow (food) and how God takes care of our bodies.

Part 4: Clean Hearts (The "I'm Sorry")

"And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors..."

  • Meaning: We ask God to wash away our mistakes, and we promise to be kind to people who were mean to us.
  • Action: Pick a Red Bead. Red reminds us of love and the heart that needs to stay kind and forgiven.

Part 5: The Guardrail (The "Help Me Stay Safe")

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."

  • Meaning: We ask God to help us make good choices and keep us away from things that might hurt us.
  • Action: Pick a Purple Bead. Purple is a "caution" color or a "royal protection" color. It reminds us God is our shield.

3. Hands-On Practice: The Prayer Tool (You Do)

Activity: Creating the Prayer Bracelet

  1. Have the student slide the beads onto the cord in the order discussed.
  2. As they slide each bead, ask them to say what that color represents (e.g., "Gold is for praising God").
  3. Tie the bracelet. This is now their "cheat sheet" for when they want to pray but don't know what to say.
  4. Creative Extension: On a piece of paper, have the student draw one thing they want to thank God for (Gold) and one thing they need help with today (Green).

4. Conclusion & Recap

Summary: "Today, we learned that the Lord’s Prayer isn't just a poem to memorize; it's a map. It shows us we can talk to God about how great He is, what we need, our mistakes, and our safety."

Recap Challenge: Ask the student: "If you only had time to pray for one thing on your bracelet today, which one would you pick? Why?"

Success Criteria: The student can recite the prayer (with some prompting) and explain at least three of the bead colors.

5. Adaptability & Differentiation

  • For the Energetic Learner: Create a "Prayer Hopscotch." Draw squares on the ground with chalk for each section of the prayer. Have the student jump into the square and say that part of the prayer.
  • For the Advanced Learner: Have them write their own "modern version" of the prayer using their own words (e.g., instead of "daily bread," they might say "help me have what I need for my baseball game").
  • For the Visual Learner: Use a "Prayer Sandwich" drawing. Each layer of the sandwich (bread, meat, cheese, lettuce) represents a different part of the prayer.

Assessment

  • Formative: During the bead activity, check if the student can match the meaning to the color.
  • Summative: At the end of the day or the next morning, ask the student to use their bracelet to say a "color prayer" where they use the colors to guide their own words.
