Objective

The objective of this lesson is for the toddler to learn basic arithmetic concepts through the theme of trucks.

Materials and Prep

  • Toy trucks
  • Counting cards (1-10)
  • Construction paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Truck Counting: Show the toddler different toy trucks and ask them to count how many trucks there are. Use the counting cards to help them if needed.
  2. Truck Addition: Draw two trucks on a piece of construction paper and ask the toddler to count how many trucks there are in total. Write the addition equation (e.g., 1 + 1 = 2) and explain the concept of adding two numbers together.
  3. Truck Subtraction: Draw three trucks on a piece of construction paper and ask the toddler to count how many trucks there are. Then, remove one truck and ask them how many trucks are left. Write the subtraction equation (e.g., 3 - 1 = 2) and explain the concept of taking away.

Toddler Grade Talking Points

  • "We have two trucks here. How many trucks do we have in total? That's right, two trucks!"
  • "Now, let's try subtracting. We have three trucks, but if we take one away, how many trucks are left?"
  • "You're doing great with your truck math! Keep practicing and soon you'll be a truck arithmetic expert!"
