Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten homeschool student will be able to write a short creative story about cars, using basic writing skills and vocabulary related to cars.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils or crayons
  • Picture books about cars (optional)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Start by discussing with the student what they know about cars. Ask questions like:

    • What are some different types of cars?
    • What do cars do?
    • Where do cars go?
  2. Read a picture book about cars together, if available. Discuss the story and the different cars mentioned in the book.

  3. Ask the student to think of their favorite type of car or a car they would like to drive. Have them draw a picture of the car on a piece of paper.

  4. Next, encourage the student to write a short story about the car they drew. Provide sentence starters or prompts to help them get started, such as:

    • "My car is a ______."
    • "I like my car because ______."
    • "My car can ______."
    • "One day, my car went to ______."
  5. After the student has written their story, have them read it aloud to you or a family member. Encourage them to use expression and point out any words or sentences they did a great job with.

  6. Finally, display the student's car drawing and story in a special place, such as on the refrigerator or a bulletin board, to celebrate their writing accomplishment!
