Sentence Superstars and Story Spinners!
Let's build amazing sentences and spin fun stories together!
Materials Needed: Paper (lined and plain); Pencils, crayons, or markers; Index cards or small pieces of paper (about 20-30); Scissors (optional, for cutting paper into cards); A favorite simple storybook (optional).
Activity 1: Word Sorting Fun (15 mins)
Let's get our words organized so we can build great sentences by identifying different parts of speech!
- Take three index cards and write the labels "Who/What" (Nouns), "Doing" (Verbs), and "Describing" (Adjectives) on them.
- On 15 blank cards, write a variety of simple words like "cat," "jumped," "blue," "pizza," "runs," "happy," "friend," "sleeps," and "shiny."
- Mix all the word cards into a pile and then sort them under the three labels you created.
- Say each word out loud as you place it to make sure it fits the category!
Activity 2: Silly Sentence Creator (20 mins)
Now we are going to mix and match our sorted words to make sentences that might be a little bit crazy!
- Pick one card from your "Who/What" pile, one from your "Doing" pile, and one from your "Describing" pile.
- Lay them out in a row and add "glue words" like "The," "is," or "a" to make the sentence sound right.
- Read your silly creation out loud and write it down on your paper. For example, you might create: "The blue cat jumped over the moon" or "A happy pizza runs to the park."
- Repeat the process to create three more silly sentences, making sure to start with a capital letter and end with a period!
Activity 3: Compound Sentence Challenge (10 mins)
Let’s grow our muscles as writers by using the "joining words" and or but to make long, superstar sentences.
- Look at the sentences you just wrote and pick two of them that you really like.
- Try to join those two ideas together using the word "and" or "but" in the middle.
- Read your long sentence out loud to see if it makes sense! Example sentences: "I like dogs and I like cats" or "The sun is hot but the water is cold."
- Practice writing your favorite joined-up sentence on a fresh line of paper.
Activity 4: Mini Story Time! (15 mins)
It is time to use your superstar sentences to tell a whole story with a beginning, middle, and end!
- Pick one of these three story-starter lines to begin your tale: "Once there was a dragon who loved cupcakes...", "I found a magic key under my bed...", or "The robot woke up and realized it was raining...".
- Write three more sentences to tell what happens next in your story, using at least one "describing" word from earlier.
- Once your story is finished, grab your plain paper and crayons to draw a picture of the most exciting part!
Wrap-up (5 mins)
- Stand up and read your favorite story or your silliest sentence out loud like a superstar performer.
- Gather your word cards and put them in a safe spot or an envelope so you can use them again for more story spinning!
