Digital Art Magic: Mastering Your First Procreate Project
Lesson Overview
In this lesson, students will transform from traditional artists to digital creators! Using the Procreate app and official beginner tutorials, students will learn the "superpowers" of digital art, including layers, the undo gesture, and basic brush techniques. By the end of the session, they will have created their first digital masterpiece.
Materials Needed
- iPad with the Procreate App installed
- Apple Pencil or a compatible stylus (fingers work too!)
- Internet access to view the Procreate "Beginner Series" on YouTube or the Procreate Education page
- A quiet workspace with a flat surface
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:
- Navigate the main Procreate gallery and create a new canvas.
- Use the "Two-Finger Tap" to undo mistakes (the digital artist's favorite trick!).
- Explain what "Layers" are using the "Sheet of Glass" analogy.
- Complete one simple character or shape drawing following a guided video tutorial.
1. Introduction: The Magic Toolbar (The Hook)
The Hook: Imagine if you had a backpack that held 1,000 paintbrushes, every color of glitter in the universe, and a "Time Machine" button that could erase any mistake instantly. That’s what you have in your hands right now!
Discussion: Ask the student, "What is one thing you find hard about drawing on paper?" (Example: erasing pencil marks, running out of a favorite color). Explain that today, we are going to learn how Procreate solves those problems.
2. "I Do": The Grand Tour (5-10 Minutes)
The educator/parent demonstrates these three "Golden Rules" of Procreate:
- The Magic Wand (Adjustments): Show where the tools are located at the top left.
- The Brush Library: Open the brushes and let the student see the variety (Watercolors, Inking, Textures).
- The Time Machine: Demonstrate the "Two-Finger Tap" to Undo and the "Three-Finger Tap" to Redo. Have the student try it three times until it feels like a reflex.
3. "We Do": The Layer Cake (Guided Practice)
Before jumping into the video, we must understand Layers. This is the most important concept in digital art!
- The Analogy: Explain that layers are like clear sheets of glass stacked on top of each other. You can draw a person on one sheet and a hat on another. If you move the "hat" sheet, the person stays the same!
- Practice Activity:
- Open a new "Square" canvas.
- On Layer 1, draw a big yellow circle (the sun).
- Add a new layer (the + button in the Layers menu).
- On Layer 2, draw a blue cloud right over the sun.
- Hide Layer 2 by unchecking the little box. "Look! The sun is still perfect underneath!"
4. "You Do": Follow the Pro (Independent Project)
Now, it’s time to follow the experts. The student will follow the Procreate "Celebrate" Tutorial (part of their official Beginner Series).
- Task: Watch the first 5-10 minutes of the Procreate Beginner tutorial (specifically focusing on creating a simple shape or character).
- Action: The student should pause the video after every instruction, complete the step on their iPad, and then press play again.
- Teacher Support: Circulate and help if they get "lost" in a menu or if their brush isn't painting (usually because they are on a hidden layer!).
5. Conclusion: The Art Gallery (Recap)
- Show and Tell: Have the student show their favorite part of their drawing.
- Review Questions:
- "How do you fix a mistake instantly?" (Two-finger tap).
- "Why do we use layers?" (To keep different parts of our drawing separate).
- "Where do you go to change your brush?" (The brush icon at the top right).
- Celebration: Export the artwork as a JPG and send it to a family member or friend to show off their first digital creation!
Success Criteria
The student has succeeded if they:
- Completed a canvas with at least two different colors and two different brushes.
- Successfully used at least two layers.
- Can demonstrate the "Undo" gesture without help.
- Saved their work to the Procreate Gallery.
Differentiation & Adaptability
- For Advanced Learners: Challenge them to use the "Alpha Lock" feature to add texture to their shapes without painting outside the lines.
- For Struggling Learners: Focus only on the "Brush" and "Eraser" tools first. Ignore layers until they feel comfortable with the stylus.
- For Group Settings: Have students trade iPads at the end to add one "surprise layer" (like a funny hat or a ladybug) to their partner's drawing.
