Detective "I" and the Case of the Long "I" Sound!

Target Age: 7 Years Old (Grade 1-2) | Duration: 45-60 Minutes

🔍 Materials Needed

  • A "Detective Badge" (can be drawn on paper and pinned or taped on)
  • A toy magnifying glass (optional, but highly recommended!)
  • Four "Case Files" (4 sheets of paper labeled: i_e, igh, y, and ie)
  • Word Clue Cards (12 index cards with one of these words written on each: kite, slide, bike, night, light, high, fly, sky, cry, pie, tie, lie)
  • A sensory container filled with dry rice, beans, or shredded paper (for hiding the clue cards), OR tape to hide cards around the room
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase marker
  • "The Case of the Missing Pie" short story sheet (provided in the lesson)

🎯 Lesson Objectives & Success Criteria

What We Will Learn:

  • Identify the long "i" vowel sound (like in the word "ice") in spoken and written words.
  • Recognize and use 4 common spelling patterns for long "i": i_e, igh, y, and ie.

Success Criteria:

  • "I can hear the long 'i' sound in a word."
  • "I can sort words into the correct spelling families."
  • "I can read and write at least one word for each of the 4 long 'i' spelling patterns."

🕵️‍♂️ Introduction: The Detective Briefing

The Hook: Put on your detective badge!

"Attention, Detective! We have a mystery to solve. The short 'i' sound (like in pin and sit) is very polite and quiet. But today, the letter 'I' is feeling proud and wants to yell out its own name: 'I!'. This is the Long I sound. The tricky part is, the Long 'I' sound uses four different secret disguises when it is written down. Your mission is to find the clues, unmask the spelling disguises, and solve the case of the Long 'I'!"

Warm-Up (Listening Game): "I am going to say some words. If you hear the short 'i' sound (like itch), freeze like an ice statue! If you hear the long 'i' sound (where the letter says its own name, like kite), jump up high and shout 'I found it!'."

Words to read aloud: Pig (freeze), Night (jump!), Sit (freeze), Pie (jump!), Bike (jump!), Fish (freeze), Cry (jump!).

📖 Step-by-Step Learning Model

1. I DO: Unmasking the 4 Disguises (Direct Instruction)

Draw 4 columns on your whiteboard. Write one spelling pattern at the top of each column. Teach the 4 disguises using these 7-year-old appropriate talking points:

Disguise 1: i_e Disguise 2: igh Disguise 3: y Disguise 4: ie
"The Magic E"
The letter 'e' sits at the end of the word. It is silent, but it waves its magic wand over the other letter to make 'i' say its name!

Examples: kite, bike
"The Three Friends"
These three letters (i, g, and h) stick together. The 'g' and 'h' are totally quiet, letting the letter 'i' do all the talking!

Examples: light, night
"The Copycat"
Sometimes, at the end of short words, the letter 'y' wants to copy the letter 'i' and make its exact sound!

Examples: fly, cry
"Vowels Walking"
When 'i' and 'e' walk together, 'i' does the talking and 'e' stays quiet. They love to be at the very end of words.

Examples: pie, tie

2. WE DO: The Sensory Clue Hunt (Guided Practice)

How to play: Hide the 12 word clue cards in your sensory bin (or hide them around the room/learning space). Lay the four "Case File" papers (labeled i_e, igh, y, ie) on the table.

  1. Instruct the student: "Search the area to find one clue card at a time!"
  2. Once a card is found, have the student read the word aloud (assist as needed by pointing out the spelling pattern).
  3. Ask: "Which disguise is this word wearing?"
  4. Help the student place the card onto the correct "Case File" sheet.
  5. Repeat until all 12 cards are found and sorted. Celebrate their detective skills!

3. YOU DO: Solve the Mystery Text (Independent Practice)

Provide the student with a yellow highlighter (or crayon) and the following short story.

THE CASE OF THE MISSING PIE

The sun was high in the sky.
A big black fly flew past my bike.
I went inside to eat a slice of pie.
But the pie was gone!
I had to try and find it before night.
I saw a crumb shining in the light.
My dog had eaten it! He let out a happy sigh.

Student Mission:
1. Read the story (with help if they get stuck).
2. Highlight all the words that have the long "i" sound.
3. Choice Activity: Choose one of the highlighted words and draw a picture of it on the back of the paper, labeling it with its spelling pattern!

🏁 Conclusion & Assessment

Recap: Bring the student back to the whiteboard. Point to each column. "Detective, what are the four secret disguises of the Long I sound?" Let the student shout them out!

Formative Assessment (The Exit Pass): To officially close the case and earn their "Master Detective" title, the student must write down or build (using magnetic letters or letter tiles) one word for each of the four spelling patterns:

  • An i_e word (e.g., nine)
  • An igh word (e.g., bright)
  • A y word (e.g., my)
  • An ie word (e.g., tie)

🔧 Adaptations & Extensions

For Extra Support (Scaffolding):

Focus on only TWO spelling patterns first (like i_e and y). Once the student masters those, introduce igh and ie on another day. Use color-coded magnetic letters (red for vowels, blue for consonants) to build the words.

For an Extra Challenge (Extension):

Have the student search for multi-syllable words that use these patterns (e.g., frightened, skydiving, magnify). Invite them to write their own mini "mystery story" using at least 5 long "i" words.
