Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of government and citizenship, and be able to apply them to the context of soccer.

Materials and Prep

  • Soccer ball
  • Cones or markers
  • Printed copies of soccer rules (optional)
  • Whiteboard or paper and markers

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Start by discussing the concept of rules in soccer. Explain that just like in soccer, governments have rules that people need to follow. Ask the student to think of some rules they need to follow in soccer, such as not using their hands or staying within the boundaries of the field.

  2. Set up a mini soccer game with the student. Use cones or markers to create a small field, and take turns playing as the referee. As the referee, the student should enforce the rules of soccer, just like a government enforces laws. Encourage the student to think about the role of the referee in maintaining fairness and order.

  3. After the game, have a discussion about citizenship. Ask the student what it means to be a good citizen in soccer. Discuss concepts such as respect for teammates and opponents, following the rules, and being a team player. Relate these concepts to being a good citizen in a community or country.

  4. As a final activity, ask the student to create a poster or drawing that represents the importance of rules and citizenship in soccer. They can include symbols, words, or illustrations to convey their message.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "In soccer, just like in our government, we have rules that we need to follow. Can you think of some rules in soccer?"
  • "The referee in soccer is like the government. They make sure everyone follows the rules and keep the game fair. Can you think of any other examples where we need someone to enforce rules?"
  • "Being a good citizen in soccer means respecting your teammates and opponents, following the rules, and being a team player. Can you think of other ways we can be good citizens in our community or country?"
  • "Your poster or drawing should show why rules and citizenship are important in soccer. Think about the symbols, words, or illustrations you can use to convey this message."
