Objective

By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to identify and describe different types of umbrellas while practicing basic reading skills.

Materials and Prep

  • A book about umbrellas
  • A few different types of umbrellas (e.g., rain umbrella, beach umbrella, paper umbrella)
  • A whiteboard or large paper
  • Markers or crayons

Activities

  • Read a Book: Start the lesson by reading a book about umbrellas. Encourage the toddler to point at and name the umbrellas they see in the book.
  • Umbrella Sorting: Show the toddler the different types of umbrellas you have prepared. Discuss the characteristics of each umbrella and have the toddler sort them into categories (e.g., rain umbrellas, beach umbrellas, paper umbrellas).
  • Labeling: Write the names of the different types of umbrellas on the whiteboard or large paper. Ask the toddler to match each label with the corresponding umbrella.
  • Draw and Describe: Give the toddler a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw their favorite type of umbrella. Encourage them to describe their drawing using simple words or sentences.

Toddler Grade Talking Points

  • "Umbrellas help us stay dry when it rains. Can you say 'umbrella'?"
  • "There are different kinds of umbrellas. Can you name some other types of umbrellas you know?"
  • "Let's sort the umbrellas into groups. Can you find the rain umbrella? How about the beach umbrella?"
  • "See the word 'rain umbrella' on the board? Can you match it with the umbrella that is for rain?"
  • "Now it's your turn to draw an umbrella. Tell me about your drawing. What colors did you use?"
