Embracing the Unknown
Henry’s Personal Guide to Navigating Change & Growth
🎒 Materials Needed
- Your favorite notebook, journal, or a clean digital document.
- A smooth-writing pen or your keyboard.
- A quiet, comfortable spot where you can sit undisturbed for 20 minutes.
- Optional: Your favorite lo-fi beats or instrumental playlist playing softly in the background.
The Science of the "Comfort Zone"
Ever notice how cozy it feels when your days follow a predictable loop? That’s your comfort zone—a mental sweet spot where routines keep stress low and security high. It’s like your favorite worn-in hoodie: safe, warm, and highly predictable.
But here’s the catch: human brains are wired to fear the unknown. Back in prehistoric times, stepping into the unknown could mean encountering a predator. Today, that instinct shows up as anxiety when things change. On top of that, we suffer from loss aversion—we naturally focus way more on what we might lose during a change than what we might gain. Even when a change is positive, our brains initially scream, "Danger!"
This journal-based experience is designed to help you flip the script. By writing things down, you give your brain a safe space to process these glitches, helping you see change not as a threat, but as an adventure.
🧘♂️ Step 1: The Grounding Reset
Before diving in, let’s clear away any mental clutter. Let's do a quick physical reset:
- Sit up comfortably and let your shoulders drop away from your ears.
- Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 seconds, feeling your lungs expand.
- Hold it for 2 seconds.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 seconds, letting go of any tension.
- Close your eyes for 10 seconds, focus only on the sound of your breathing, and bring yourself fully into the present moment.
1 Reflect on Past Changes
Think about a significant shift that has occurred in your life. It could be moving houses, changing schools, starting a new hobby, a shift in a friendship, or even a major change in how you view the world.
Choose three of the questions below and write your honest thoughts in your journal:
- ❓ Question A: What exactly was the change, and how did it disrupt your usual routine?
- ❓ Question B: How did it initially make you feel? (Be honest—were you stressed, excited, annoyed, or a mix of everything?)
- ❓ Question C: What specific fears or anxieties did you have about the unknown future?
- ❓ Question D: What was the hardest part of letting go of the "old way" of doing things?
2 Identify Positive Outcomes
Now, let's fast-forward. Look at that same past change through a lens of growth. Even if it was a difficult experience, what positive things bloomed from it over time?
In your journal, write about how this change ultimately benefited you:
Think about: New skills you learned, strengths you discovered in yourself, new friendships, cool opportunities, or how it helped you grow more resilient.
3 Embrace Future Changes
Think about a change you are currently facing or one you know is coming up soon (e.g., a new academic year, starting a new project, a shift in your schedule, or learning a difficult new skill).
Let's mentally prepare to meet this change with curiosity instead of fear. Write down your thoughts on the following points:
- How can you approach this upcoming change with an open, curious mind?
- What potential positive things could come out of this situation?
- What can you do to support yourself mentally and emotionally as you transition? (e.g., taking breaks, talking to family, getting enough sleep).
4 Gratitude for Change
Gratitude is like a cheat code for shifting your perspective. When we focus on what we are thankful for, it actually rewires our brain's stress response.
List three distinct things you are incredibly grateful for that only exist in your life because of past changes:
01. Gratitude Point
02. Gratitude Point
03. Gratitude Point
5 Create Your Affirmation Shield
An affirmation is a simple, powerful phrase that you say to yourself to break negative thought patterns. When you find yourself worrying about the future, you can repeat this phrase to ground yourself.
Choose one of the affirmations below that speaks to you, or write your own custom one:
