My First Summer Camp: Fun with Flying Discs!

Theme: Summer Camp preparation & gross motor skill development using toddler-safe "frisbees."

Target Age: 3 Years Old (Designed to bridge transition into 4-6 year old summer camp style activities)

🎒 Materials Needed:

  • Soft Flying Discs: 2-3 soft fabric, silicone, or foam frisbees (safer and easier for 3-year-olds than hard plastic).
  • DIY Option: 3 sturdy paper plates, markers, and stickers.
  • Targets: A laundry basket, a hula hoop, or a beach towel laid flat on the grass/floor.
  • Visual Cue: Colorful painter's tape or a rope to make a "standing line."
  • Reward: A "Camp Champion" sticker or paper badge.

Learning Objectives & Success Criteria

What We Are Learning (Objectives) What Success Looks Like (Criteria)
  • Shape Identification: Recognize that the disc is a circle.
  • Gross Motor Skills (Throwing): Attempt a forward throwing motion with a disc.
  • Gross Motor Skills (Catching): Attempt to catch or trap the disc using two hands.
  • Social-Emotional: Follow simple 1-step and 2-step "camp game" rules.
  • The child can trace the edge of the disc and say "circle."
  • The child releases the disc forward (even if it rolls or drops quickly).
  • The child uses their chest and arms together ("alligator catch") to stop the disc.
  • The child stands behind the tape line when asked.

1. Introduction: Welcome to Frisbee Camp!

Time: ~5 minutes

Educator/Parent Tip: Put on a fun hat or a whistle to simulate a "Summer Camp Counselor." 3-year-olds respond wonderfully to roleplay and dramatic voice changes!

🗣️ Talking Points for the Educator:

"Welcome to Frisbee Camp, camper! Today, we are going to play a super fun game with a magic flying circle! Look at this. (Hold up the soft disc). What shape is this? Yes! It's a circle, round and round! Today, we are going to learn how to make it fly like a bird, and how to catch it like a friendly alligator! Are you ready to earn your Camp Badge?"

Warm-Up Activity (The "Circle Spin"):
Have the child hold the disc with both hands. Ask them to spin in a circle like a helicopter, then stop, hold the disc high in the sky, and then low to touch their toes. This warms up their core muscles and balance.

2. The Learning Journey (I Do, We Do, You Do)

Time: ~15 minutes

Step 1: I Do (Modeling the Throw & Catch)

The Throw: Show the child how to hold the disc. Put your thumb on top and fingers curled underneath.

🗣️ Talking Points:

"Watch me! I hug my disc close to my tummy. Then, I point my arm straight out and say: WHOOSH! (Throw the disc gently a short distance onto the floor). See how it flew?"

The Catch (The Alligator Catch): Explain that when the disc comes to us, we catch it with two flat hands clapping together horizontally.

🗣️ Talking Points:

"When the flying circle comes to you, make your arms like a big, silly alligator mouth. Snap! (Clap hands together flatly). Let's practice snapping our alligator jaws! Snap, snap!"

Step 2: We Do (Guided Practice)

Stand about 2 to 3 feet apart from the child (very close to ensure success and safety).

  • Practice the "Alligator Snap": Hand the disc gently directly into the child's open hands so they can feel the "snap" action. Celebrate the catch!
  • Practice the "Whoosh" Release: Help the child place their thumb on top of the disc. Hold your hand over theirs, gently pull it back toward their tummy, and guide their arm forward to release it into your hands.

🗣️ Talking Points:

"Ready, camper? Snap those alligator arms! Catch! Wow, you caught it! Now, let's put our hands together... draw back to your tummy... and 1, 2, 3... WHOOSH! Great throw!"

Step 3: You Do (Independent Play Games)

Set up two fun summer-camp themed challenges to let the child explore independently. Let them choose which game to play first!

🔥 Game A: Feed the Campfire (Target Throw)

Place a laundry basket or a hula hoop flat on the grass. Tell the child this is the "campfire" and the discs are "logs" to keep it warm. Have them stand behind a tape line and throw/toss the discs into the basket. Praise any effort, even if the disc rolls in!

🏃‍♂️ Game B: Camp Run and Catch

Stand a few feet away. Toss the disc gently so it lands on the ground near the child. Shout, "Run and catch the runaway circle!" The child runs, picks it up using their "alligator hands," and runs it back to you.

3. Conclusion: Campfire Closing Ceremony

Time: ~5 minutes

Gather on the floor/grass. Sit cross-legged like you are sitting around a real summer camp campfire.

🗣️ Talking Points:

"Campers, sit down around our campfire! What a fun day at camp. We played with our magic circle! Show me with your hands, what shape is the disc? (Wait for them to make a circle with their hands). Show me how an alligator catches it! (Wait for a clap). And how do we throw it? WHOOSH! You did fantastic today. You worked your muscles and played so nicely!"

The Award: Hand the child their "Camp Champion" sticker or paper badge. Congratulate them with a high-five or a special camp handshake!

🎯 Assessment: How did they do?

Observe the child during "You Do" play and check for the following developmental milestones:

  • Formative Check: Did the child show excitement and try to throw the disc forward? (Focus on the joy of movement rather than perfect technique).
  • Fine Motor Check: Were they able to grip the edge of the disc with their fingers instead of palms only?
  • Physical Milestone: Did they try to coordinate both hands to catch/stop the disc, rather than just using their body to block it?

4. Adaptability & Differentiation

🔍 For Struggling Learners (Scaffolding):
  • If throwing is too hard, use decorated paper plates. They are lighter and slide easily on hardwood floors or tables.
  • Instead of throwing in the air, play "Disc Bowling" where they roll the disc on its side toward a plastic cup target.
  • Stand even closer (1 foot away) and simply drop the disc into their hands.
🚀 For Advanced Learners (Extensions):
  • Increase the throwing distance to 4-5 feet.
  • Add "wind" by having them run forward while throwing.
  • Introduce a color game: "Throw the red disc to the red towel, and the blue disc to the blue towel!" This prepares them for structured 4-6 year old camp games.
