Super Soccer Safari!

An Active Soccer Lesson for Little Champions (Ages 4-6)

Materials Needed

  • 1 Soccer Ball: Size 3 is best for ages 4-6 (a soft playground ball or foam ball works great too!).
  • 4-6 Cones: (Can substitute with plastic cups, colorful socks, or stuffed animals).
  • 1 "Goal": A laundry basket turned on its side, a cardboard box, or two chairs set apart.
  • Chalk or Painters Tape: To mark a "start line" and "finish line."
  • Optional: A whistle or a music player for "Freeze" moments.

Learning Objectives & Success Criteria

What We Will Learn (Objectives) What Success Looks Like (Criteria)
The Golden Rule: Understand that in soccer, we use our feet, not our hands! The learner catches themselves or remembers to use only feet during the games.
Baby Kicks (Dribbling): Keep the soccer ball close to the body while moving. The learner takes small, gentle taps to keep the ball within arm's reach.
The "Trap" (Stopping): Stop the ball completely using the bottom of the foot. The learner can step gently on top of the ball to freeze it when asked.

1. Introduction: The Magic Soccer Shoes (10 Minutes)

Teacher/Parent Hook: "Oh my goodness, look at your shoes! Are those... magic soccer shoes? I think they are! Today, our hands are going to go on a deep sleep, and our feet are going to wake up to do all the talking. In soccer, our feet are the kings and queens!"

Interactive Warm-up Game: "Wake Up, Feet!"

  1. Have the child stand up. Ask them to glue their hands to their hips or put them in their pockets.
  2. Ask the child: "Can you wiggle your toes? Can you stomp like a giant? Can you stand on one foot like a flamingo?"
  3. Introduce the soccer ball: "This is our soccer ball. What is the one thing we CANNOT use to touch it? That's right—our hands! If we touch it with our hands, we have to shout 'Beep Beep!' and do a silly dance!"

2. The Soccer Playbook (25 Minutes)

Part A: "I Do" - Demonstration (5 Minutes)

Show the child two major soccer moves:

  • The "Baby Kick" (Dribbling): "Watch me. I am taking my ball for a walk. I use tiny, gentle baby kicks so the ball doesn't run away from me. If I kick it too hard, it gets lost in the jungle!"
  • The "Toe Tap Stop" (Trapping): "When I say 'FREEZE!', watch how I put the bottom of my shoe right on top of the ball. Like I'm stepping on a bug, but very gently! We call this 'putting a hat' on the ball."

Part B: "We Do" - Guided Practice: "The Soccer Safari" (10 Minutes)

Set up the cones (stuffed animals) around the space. Tell the child they are driving a safari jeep (the soccer ball) through the jungle.

  • Step 1: Start at the start line. Together, drive your "jeeps" slowly around the safari animals (cones).
  • Step 2: Call out animal actions!
    • "Drive slow like a turtle!" (Tiny slow taps)
    • "Drive fast like a cheetah!" (Slightly faster dribbling)
    • "Watch out! A sleeping lion! Put a hat on your ball and FREEZE!" (Child must stop the ball with their foot).
  • Feedback Loop: Celebrate immediately when they stop the ball! "Wow! You saved the jeep from the lion! Great freeze!"

Part C: "You Do" - Active Challenge: "Kick to the Castle" (10 Minutes)

Now the child applies their skills to score!

  1. Set up the "Goal" (the Castle) at one end of the yard or room.
  2. Put 3 cones in a straight line leading up to the goal.
  3. The child must:
    1. Dribble (baby kick) the ball around the cones.
    2. Stop the ball at the last cone (put a "hat" on it).
    3. Take a big kick to score a goal into the Castle!
  4. Repeat 3-5 times. If they miss, encourage them: "Oh, so close! Let's try again, you've got this!"

3. Conclusion & Celebration (5 Minutes)

The Cool Down: Sit on the floor with the soccer ball. Roll it back and forth using hands now (since the game is over!). Take deep breaths together.

Recap Questions (Ask the child):

  • "What is the golden rule of soccer? Do we use hands or feet?" (Feet!)
  • "How do we stop a fast ball?" (Put a hat on it / step on it gently!)

Perform a silly "Goal Celebration Dance" together to end on a high note!

Adaptations & Extra Fun

Support (For younger or struggling learners) Challenge (For older/advanced 5-6 year olds)
  • Use a larger, lighter ball (like a beach ball or balloon) to make kicks slower and easier to track.
  • Forget the cones; just focus on kicking the ball into the wide open goal.
  • Hold the child's hand while they try to step on the ball to balance.
  • Add a "Defender": Parent/Teacher tries to gently steal the ball (walking very slowly).
  • Time Attack: Use a stopwatch to see how fast they can finish the safari!
  • Use a smaller goal or move the starting line further back.

Checklist for Parents/Coaches (Assessment)

Keep an eye out for these milestones during play:

  • Does the child show joy and excitement while moving with the ball?
  • Can the child stop their body and the ball when you say "Freeze"?
  • Did the child attempt to solve the obstacle course using mostly feet?
