Little Strikers: 3-Session Summer Soccer Camp
Target Age: 4β6 Years Old | Structure: 3 Sessions x 30 Minutes | Context: Homeschool, Small Group, or Camp Setting
π Required Materials & Setup
- Soccer Ball: Size 3 is ideal for ages 4β6 (one ball per child).
- Cones: 10β12 colorful cones (or household substitutes like clean plastic cups, socks, or plush toys).
- Goal: A pop-up net, or 2 large cones/bags set 4 feet apart to act as a goal.
- Visual Cards: Red, Yellow, and Green paper/cardstock sheets.
- Rewards: Fun stickers, stamps, or high-fives for the closing ceremonies.
- Space: A flat grassy area, driveway, park, or large living room (clear of breakables) roughly 15x15 feet.
β½ Session 1: "My Pet Soccer Ball" (Dribbling & Ball Familiarity)
Focus: Getting comfortable with the ball, using light touches, and keeping the ball close.
π― Session Objectives
- The learner will keep their ball within arm's reach while walking/jogging.
- The learner will identify and use the "inside" and "bottom" of their foot to touch the ball.
The Hook: "Welcome to Soccer Camp! Today, your soccer ball isn't just a ballβitβs a brand-new puppy! What should we name your puppy? (Allow child to name it). Excellent! Our puppy is very energetic, but we have to keep it close so it doesn't run away into the street. If it gets too far, we have to yell 'Come back, puppy!'"
Warm-up Action: Have the child practice running, skipping, and jumping *without* the ball first in a designated space to get their heart rate up.
Show the learner how to gently tap the ball from side to side using the insides of their feet ("tick-tocks"). Show them how to put the sole of their foot on top of the ball to make it "freeze" or sleep. Say: "Look how gentle my touches are. If I kick it hard, the puppy runs away!"
Walk side-by-side with the learner. Both of you gently kick your balls forward using tiny baby touches. Every few seconds, shout: "Puppy, Sleep!" Both you and the learner must quickly put the sole of your foot on top of the ball to freeze it. Celebrate when the ball stops instantly!
Scatter 6β8 cones (or cups) randomly around the space. Tell the child: "These are trees in the park. Can you walk your puppy all the way through the park without bumping into any trees?" Let them navigate the maze.
Extension: If they do it easily, challenge them to go faster or count how many trees they can pass in 30 seconds.
Scaffolding: If they struggle, remove half the cones to create wider paths.
The Recap: "Put your puppy to sleep one last time! Fantastic. Today we learned how to keep our soccer puppy close to us."
Quick Check (Formative Assessment): Ask the child: "Show me what part of your foot you use to stop the ball when the puppy needs to sleep!" (They should put the bottom of their foot on the ball). Give them a high-five and a session sticker!
π Session 2: "Space Explorers & Speed Racers" (Control & Directions)
Focus: Changing direction, lifting the head while dribbling, and reacting to visual/audio cues.
π― Session Objectives
- The learner will successfully change directions when meeting an obstacle.
- The learner will look up from the ball to react to color cue cards (Red/Green).
The Hook: "Start your engines! (Vroom vroom!) Today, your ball is a super-fast race car. You are the driver! We have to drive around the track, but we must watch the traffic lights so we don't crash into other cars or off the road!"
Warm-up Action: "Red Light, Green Light" *without* the ball. Run on Green, walk on Yellow, freeze like a statue on Red.
Demonstrate how to steer the ball using the inside of the foot to turn left or right. Demonstrate the "Emergency Brake": putting your foot on top of the ball and shouting "Screeech!"
Dribble together in the space. Hold up colored cards:
π¦ Green Card: Drive fast (dribble forward).
π¦ Yellow Card: Slow school zone (slow, tiny touches).
π¦ Red Card: Brake! (Foot on top of the ball, freeze).
Keep it playful by making car engine noises together.
The child must dribble from one side of the space to the other. You (parent/coach) will stand in the middle and slowly roll soft "asteroids" (soft toys, foam balls, or extra cones) across their path. The child must steer their "spaceship" (ball) to dodge the obstacles and reach the safe zone.
Extension: Increase the speed of the rolled obstacles or narrow the safe zone.
Scaffolding: Instead of moving obstacles, place stationary cones that the child must steer around at their own pace.
The Recap: "Park your cars in the garage! You did an amazing job steering and keeping your eyes up today."
Quick Check (Formative Assessment): Hold up the Red Card without saying anything. See if the child instantly puts their foot on the ball to brake. If they do, they pass the driver's test! Reward them with another session sticker.
π₯ Session 3: "Super Goal Scorers" (Kicking & Shooting)
Focus: Kicking with the laces/instep (not toes!), aiming at a target, and celebrating success.
π― Session Objectives
- The learner will kick a stationary or moving ball using their shoelaces/inside of the foot.
- The learner will kick the ball forward into a designated target area (goal).
The Hook: "Today is the Grand Finale! We are going to unlock our super-kicking power to score big goals! But to unlock the power, we have to learn the secret trick: no 'toe pokes'! We kick with our magical shoelaces!"
Warm-up Action: Have the child practice swinging their leg back like a pendulum and tapping their shoelaces with their hand to build muscle memory.
Point to your shoelaces. Point to the child's shoelaces. Demonstrate kicking the ball towards the goal using your laces with a smooth follow-through. Say: "Watch how my toe points down to the grass when I kick. This makes the ball fly straight and strong!"
Set up a goal (or two cones) and pretend it is a hungry, friendly monster. The only thing this monster eats is soccer balls! Set up 3 "launchpads" (cones to place the ball on) at varying distances (3 feet, 5 feet, 8 feet). Take turns kicking the balls into the "monster's mouth" (the goal). Shout: "Yum, yum, yum!" when a goal is scored.
Set up a starting line. The child must dribble their ball through a short "zigzag" path of 3 cones, get past a final marker, and take a shot on the big goal.
Crucial rule: When they score, they must perform their favorite "Super Goal Celebration Dance" (e.g., airplane wings, jumping jacks, or sliding on the grass).
Extension: You can act as a "sleepy goalkeeper" sitting or kneeling in the goal, moving slowly to try and block their shot.
Scaffolding: Move the shooting line closer to the goal and make the goal wider.
The Recap: "Freeze your balls! What a phenomenal performance. Over these 3 sessions, you learned how to walk your puppy (dribble), brake your race car (stop), and score like a superhero (shoot)!"
Summative Assessment (Success Criteria):
Can the child:
1. Dribble the ball forward under control?
2. Stop the ball on command with their foot?
3. Kick the ball forward with their laces/inside foot?
If yes to these basic milestones, they have successfully completed the mini-camp!
π Award a "Summer Soccer Champion" medal, certificate, or special treat to celebrate their hard work! π
