Summer Camp Frisbee Fun: A 3-Session Introduction for Ages 4-6
Course Overview & Materials
Target Age Group: 4–6 years old
Format: 3 Sessions x 30 Minutes per session
Setting: Backyard, park, gym, or large open indoor space
General Description: This series introduces early learners to basic frisbee hand-eye coordination, catching, and throwing through imaginative, high-energy games. At this age, the focus is on physical literacy, tracking objects in space, and positive reinforcement.
Materials Needed:
- Soft Frisbees (3-5 minimum): Silicone, foam, or fabric discs (highly recommended for safety and confidence-building; standard hard plastic discs can hurt little hands).
- Cones or Markers (6-8): To set boundaries and targets.
- Hula Hoops (2-3): For targets and station work.
- Plastic Cups or Empty Clean Plastic Bottles (10): To build "castles" for target practice.
- Large Laundry Basket or Storage Bin (1): Used as a giant target and cleanup goal.
- Bright Masking Tape or Chalk: For marking starting lines.
Session 1: "The Alligator Catch & Flying Saucer Chase"
Focus: Tracking a flying object, hand-eye coordination, and two-handed catching.
Learning Objectives:
- Learners will successfully track a moving disc visually.
- Learners will demonstrate the two-handed "Alligator Catch" (clap catch) 3 out of 5 times from a short distance (2-3 feet).
1. Introduction & Hook (5 Minutes)
- The Hook: "Today, we are space explorers, and these soft colorful discs are friendly flying saucers! But to play with them, we have to learn how to catch them safely so they don't zoom away into deep space!"
- Warm-Up (Red Light, Green Light - Disc Style): The learner holds the frisbee like a steering wheel. When the instructor says "Green Light!", the learner runs around holding the disc. "Red Light!" means freeze and hold the disc high above their head like an astronaut helmet. "Yellow Light!" means slow-motion walking.
2. Body: I Do, We Do, You Do (17 Minutes)
Step 1: The "Alligator Catch" (I Do / We Do) - 5 mins
- I Do: The instructor demonstrates the "Alligator Catch" (also known as the pancake catch). Hold your hands wide apart vertically, like an open alligator mouth. When the disc arrives, SNAP! Clap your hands together to trap the disc.
"Watch my hands. They open wide... and SNAP! I catch the flying saucer." - We Do: The learner practices making "snap" motions in the air. Next, the instructor gently drops the disc from 6 inches directly into the learner's open "alligator mouth" hands. Repeat 5 times to build confidence.
Step 2: "Feed the Alligator" (You Do - Guided Practice) - 6 mins
- The instructor steps back 2 to 3 feet and gently tosses/lofts the soft disc with a soft, slow arc toward the learner's chest.
- The learner uses the "Alligator Catch" to trap the disc.
- Celebrate every touch, even if it drops! Say: "Great alligator try! Your hands snapped right on time!"
Step 3: "Saucer Rollers" (You Do - Active Game) - 6 mins
- Setup: Stand about 10 feet apart.
- Action: The instructor rolls the soft disc on its edge across the grass/floor toward the learner.
- The learner must chase the rolling "saucer," track its movement, and catch/trap it on the ground before it tips over. Repeat several times, swapping roles if the learner wants to try rolling it back.
3. Conclusion & Assessment (8 Minutes)
- Cool-Down (The Laundry Basket Clean-Up): Scatter all soft discs around the play area. Challenge the learner to run, pick them up, and bring them back one-by-one to drop into the laundry basket ("The Spaceship Landing Dock") as fast as they can while counting out loud.
- Recap & Reflection: Ask the learner: "Show me with your hands, what does the alligator look like when he catches a frisbee?" (Wait for clap gesture). "Awesome job today, Space Explorer!"
- Formative Assessment: Observe if the child is closing their eyes or turning their face away when the disc is tossed (indicate need for softer, closer drops) or if they are successfully clapping their hands together on the disc.
Session 2: "The Pizza Server Throw"
Focus: Introducing the backhand grip, body stance, and the release motion.
Learning Objectives:
- Learners will demonstrate the correct "thumb on top, fingers tucked" grip.
- Learners will throw a soft disc forward at least 5 feet toward a target using a flat, level arm swing.
1. Introduction & Hook (5 Minutes)
- The Hook: "Today, we are opening a Pizza Parlor! These discs are delicious, hot pizzas. We can't drop them, and we have to slide them across the counter to our hungry customers!"
- Warm-Up (Pizza Balance Walk): Place a soft disc flat on the learner’s hand (like a waiter carrying a tray). Have them walk, jog, and bend down to touch one knee without dropping the "pizza." Switch to balancing it on their head for 10 seconds!
2. Body: I Do, We Do, You Do (17 Minutes)
Step 1: The "Pizza Server Grip" (I Do / We Do) - 5 mins
- I Do: Show the grip. Put your thumb on top of the disc, and curl your fingers loosely underneath the rim. Stand sideways to your target (shoulder pointing to the customer). Pull the disc back to your opposite belly hip, then fling your arm straight out, keeping it flat like a table.
"Look at my arm, it stays flat like a table so the cheese doesn't slide off the pizza!" - We Do: Help the learner place their thumb on top and curl their fingers under. Have them practice standing sideways (shoulder pointing forward) and swinging their arm back and forth, keeping the disc flat.
Step 2: "Knock Down the Castle" (You Do - Guided Practice) - 6 mins
- Setup: Build a tower of plastic cups or clean plastic bottles on top of a box or step stool. Place a cone 4-5 feet away as the throwing line.
- Action: The learner stands at the cone sideways and throws their "pizzas" to try and knock down the cup castle.
- Scaffolding: If they struggle, move them closer (3 feet). If it's too easy, move them back (6-8 feet) or make the target smaller.
Step 3: "Pass the Pizza" (You Do - Active Practice) - 6 mins
- The learner and instructor stand 5 feet apart.
- The learner throws the disc to the instructor. The instructor catches it, runs in a small circle pretending to be a happy customer eating pizza, then tosses it back for the child to catch (using their alligator catch from Session 1!).
3. Conclusion & Assessment (8 Minutes)
- Cool-Down (Clean the Kitchen): Divide the space into two sides with a line of tape or cones. Put 3 discs on the learner's side and 3 on the instructor's side. On "Go!", both throw their discs to the other side. When "Stop!" is called (after 45 seconds), count who has the cleanest kitchen (fewer discs on their side). *Ensure soft foam discs are used for safety!*
- Recap & Reflection: Ask the learner: "Where does your thumb go when we hold our pizza frisbee? On the top or the bottom?" (On top!)
- Formative Assessment: Note if the learner is throwing vertically (like a wheel) or horizontally (flat). Gently guide their elbow to help them keep the swing level.
Session 3: "The Camp Frisbee Safari Adventure"
Focus: Combining throwing, catching, and movement into an interactive obstacle course.
Learning Objectives:
- Learners will apply catching and throwing skills dynamically while navigating a simple movement course.
- Learners will follow multi-step instructions combining physical movement and disc play.
1. Introduction & Hook (5 Minutes)
- The Hook: "Welcome to the Frisbee Safari! Today we are adventurers going through a wild jungle. We will need our magic discs to cross rivers, feed hungry animals, and jump over sleepy alligators!"
- Warm-Up (Safari Animal Walks): Move across the space using animal actions:
- Frog hops over a disc on the ground.
- Cheetah runs around three cones.
- Flamingo balance: Stand on one foot while holding the disc on your knee for 5 seconds.
2. Body: The Safari Obstacle Course (17 Minutes)
Set up a mini obstacle course using your materials. Walk the learner through the course first (I Do), practice together (We Do), then let them run the course independently (You Do).
| Station | Activity / Challenge | Skill Focused |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The River Crossing | Place 3 hula hoops (or chalk circles) on the ground. The learner must step/hop from "stone to stone" while holding their disc safely. | Balance and Coordination |
| 2. Feed the Monkey | A large laundry basket has a picture of a monkey taped to it (or just designate it as the monkey's mouth). The learner must stand at a cone 4 feet away and throw their disc into the basket to "feed" the monkey. | Throwing Accuracy (Pizza Server) |
| 3. Canopy Catch | The instructor stands at the end of the course. As the learner emerges from the "jungle," the instructor gently lofts a soft disc. The learner must make an "Alligator Catch." | Tracking and Catching |
How to Run the Course:
- Round 1 (Practice Run): Walk through the course together, helping with the throw at Station 2 and the catch at Station 3.
- Round 2 & 3 (Safari Challenge!): Time the learner using a stopwatch (or just cheer them on with high energy) to see if they can complete the safari. Celebrate every completion with a high five!
3. Conclusion & Celebration (8 Minutes)
- Cool-Down (Cloud Floating): Lie down on the grass or floor. Hold the soft disc and gently fan your face with it like a breeze. Take deep belly breaths: breathe in through your nose, and blow out gently to make the disc wiggle in your hands.
- Summative Celebration: Present the learner with a high-five and a verbal "Frisbee Camp Master" award.
"You did amazing! You can catch like an alligator, throw like a pizza chef, and run a whole jungle safari!"
Adaptation & Differentiation Strategies
For Struggling Learners (Scaffolding):
- Catching: If the alligator catch is too difficult, use a colorful, soft, air-filled balloon first to practice the clapping catch motion at a slower speed. Then transition back to the soft fabric disc.
- Throwing: Decrease the distance to targets to just 2 feet. Allow them to use two hands to push/throw the disc forward to build the sensation of target accuracy first.
For Advanced Learners (Extensions):
- Catching: Challenge them to catch the disc using only *one* hand (the "Claw Catch") or try to catch it while hopping on one foot.
- Throwing: Introduce the "Trick Shot." Can they throw the disc so it lands inside a hula hoop from 8 feet away? Can they try a backhand throw with their non-dominant hand?
