The Magic of Metamorphosis: A Butterfly's Journey
A Fun, Hands-On Science Lesson Designed for Marissa (Age 7)
Lesson Overview & Materials
This interactive lesson explores the life cycle of a butterfly through storytelling, movement, and a creative 3D craft. While customized for Marissa, this lesson is easily adaptable for small groups or classroom environments.
Materials Needed:
- 1 paper plate (or a piece of paper cut into a large circle)
- A green crayon or marker
- A black marker (for writing/labeling)
- Craft Option A (The Pasta Method):
- 1 small white bead or uncooked Orzo/Acini di pepe pasta (Egg)
- 1 piece of Rotini/Fusilli spiral pasta (Caterpillar)
- 1 piece of Shell pasta (Chrysalis)
- 1 piece of Farfalle/Bow-tie pasta (Butterfly)
- Craft Option B (The Playdough Method - Alternative):
- Green, yellow, brown, and blue playdough
- School glue or liquid glue
- A child-friendly magnifying glass (optional)
- A flashlight
Learning Objectives & Success Criteria
| What We Are Learning (Objectives) | How We Know We Met Our Goal (Success Criteria) |
|---|---|
| Identify and name the four stages of a butterfly's life cycle. | Marissa can point to and name the Egg, Larva (Caterpillar), Pupa (Chrysalis), and Adult stages. |
| Understand the scientific word metamorphosis (big change). | Marissa can explain in her own words that a butterfly changes its whole body shape as it grows. |
| Sequence the life cycle stages in the correct order. | Marissa correctly builds her 3D paper plate cycle moving clockwise from Stage 1 to Stage 4. |
1. The Introduction (The Hook)
Time: 10 Minutes
The Mystery of the Crawling Leaf
Begin by dimming the lights slightly. Turn on the flashlight and shine it on your hand, wiggling your fingers like a tiny caterpillar.
Educator Script:
"Marissa, imagine you are a tiny creature living on a big green leaf. You don't have wings, and you can only crawl very, very slowly. You spend your whole day munching on green leaves. Crunch, crunch, crunch! But then, one day, something magical happens. You go to sleep inside a tiny sleeping bag, and when you wake up... you have wings! You can fly high into the sky, taste sweet flower juice, and see the whole world! How do you think it would feel to change your body like that? Today, we are going to discover the superpower of the butterfly. It's a big science word called metamorphosis! Can you try saying that word with me? Met-a-mor-pho-sis!"
Interactive Question: "If you could change into any flying creature, what would you want to look like?" (Allow Marissa to share her creative ideas.)
2. The Body (I Do, We Do, You Do)
Time: 30 Minutes
Step 1: I Do (Interactive Storytelling & Movements)
Explain the 4 stages using clear physical actions. Encourage Marissa to mimic the movements to build muscle memory of the concepts.
-
Stage 1: The Egg.
Science Detail: A mother butterfly lays a tiny egg on a leaf.
Action: Curl up on the floor like a tiny, round egg. Hold your knees! -
Stage 2: The Caterpillar (Larva).
Science Detail: Out pops a hungry caterpillar! It eats and eats, growing bigger and shedding its skin.
Action: Crawl on your tummy on the floor and make loud eating noises: "Munch, munch, munch!" -
Stage 3: The Chrysalis (Pupa).
Science Detail: The caterpillar hangs upside down and forms a hard protective shell. Inside, its body is changing completely!
Action: Stand very still, cross your arms tightly over your chest, and close your eyes. Pretend to be fast asleep. -
Stage 4: The Butterfly (Adult).
Science Detail: A beautiful adult butterfly emerges, waits for its wings to dry, and flies away!
Action: Gently flap your arms up and down, dancing around the room like a happy butterfly.
Step 2: We Do (The Metamorphosis Match Game)
Let's check our understanding together before doing the craft.
Educator Guide:
"Marissa, I am going to call out a stage or show you a motion, and you tell me what stage of the life cycle it is! If I curl up on the floor, what am I? Yes, the egg! Now, can you show me what the caterpillar does when it is hungry? Awesome job! Now, let's look at our craft materials together. Let's line up our pastas (or playdough colors) from the first stage to the very last stage."
Guide Marissa in placing the pasta shapes in order on the table to make sure she understands the sequence before gluing.
Step 3: You Do (The 3D Life Cycle Plate Craft)
Now, Marissa will create her own 3D display of the butterfly life cycle!
- Divide the Plate: Help Marissa draw a large "+" sign on her paper plate with a black marker to split the plate into 4 equal quadrants (sections).
- Label the Stages: In clockwise order, write the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 in each section. Marissa can write the names of the stages with your guidance:
- Section 1: Egg
- Section 2: Caterpillar
- Section 3: Chrysalis
- Section 4: Butterfly
- Draw the Environment: Ask Marissa to draw a green leaf in Section 1 (for the egg to sit on), a leaf with bite marks in Section 2 (for the hungry caterpillar), a brown branch in Section 3 (for the chrysalis to hang from), and some colorful flowers in Section 4.
- Glue the 3D Models:
- Glue the Orzo/bead onto the leaf in Section 1.
- Glue the Rotini pasta onto the chewed leaf in Section 2.
- Glue the Shell pasta hanging from the branch in Section 3.
- Glue the Farfalle (bow-tie) pasta near the flowers in Section 4.
- Decorate: Let Marissa color the background or add glitter/stickers to make her butterfly garden come to life!
3. Conclusion & Reflection
Time: 10 Minutes
Wrap up the lesson by celebrating Marissa's work and checking what she learned with a fun "show-and-tell" style presentation.
Educator Script:
"Wow, Marissa! Your butterfly life cycle plate is absolutely beautiful! Can you be the teacher now and walk me through your plate? Start at Stage 1 and tell me the story of how your butterfly grew up. What was your favorite stage to learn about?"
Fun Final Fact: "Did you know that butterflies taste their food using their feet instead of their tongues? Imagine if you had to step on your dinner to taste it!"
Assessments
Formative Assessment (During the Lesson):
- Observe Marissa's participation in the physical movement actions. Does she transition correctly from crawling (caterpillar) to frozen/hanging (chrysalis)?
- Check her matching during the "We Do" game. Can she pair the pasta shapes with the correct names before they are glued down?
Summative Assessment (End of Lesson):
- Evaluate the finished Paper Plate Craft. Are all four stages labeled and glued in the correct sequence (Egg → Caterpillar → Chrysalis → Butterfly)?
- Ask Marissa to explain the word "Metamorphosis" using her plate. If she can describe it as a complete transformation from one shape to another, she has mastered the concept!
Adaptations & Extensions
For Extra Support (Scaffolding)
If writing the stage names is challenging, write them out on sticky notes or dashed lines so Marissa can trace the letters. Use picture cards alongside the pasta shapes so she can match them visually before gluing.
For Advanced Learners (Extension)
Encourage Marissa to write a short story from the perspective of her caterpillar on her plate. You can also research what specific plants host local butterflies in your area (like Milkweed for Monarchs) and plant a seeds in a small pot!
