1. Introduction: The Hook (5-10 Minutes)

Educator Script/Action:

"Welkom, Speurder! (Welcome, Detective!) Today, you aren't just reading a story. You are a detective on a mission. Writers love to hide clues inside their texts, and readers have to find them. This is what we call a begripstoets (comprehension test).

To solve any mystery, a good detective needs a strategy. We can't just read the text and guess! Today, we are going to learn the 3-Stap Speurmetode (3-Step Detective Method) to track down the perfect answers every single time."

The 3-Stap Speurmetode:

  1. Stap 1: Ondersoek die Vraag (Investigate the Question): Highlight the question words (Wie, Wat, Waar, Wanneer, Waarom, Hoe) and keywords.
  2. Stap 2: Volg die Spoor (Follow the Trail): Scan the text for those exact keywords or synonyms.
  3. Stap 3: Sluit die Saak (Close the Case): Write the answer in a beautiful, full Afrikaans sentence.

2. Body: Content & Practice (30 Minutes)

The Reading Passage (Die Teks)

Step-by-Step Practice (I Do, We Do, You Do)

Step 1: I Do (Ek wys jou)

The educator models how to tackle the first question using the 3-Step Method.

How to solve it:

  • Stap 1: Identify the question word. "Waar" means where (looking for a place!). Highlight "Waar" and "gekry" (found).
  • Stap 2: Scan the text for "Liam" and "katjie" and "gekry/hoor/sien". Ah!
  • Stap 3: Write in a full sentence. We cannot just write "onder die vyeboom". We must use elements of the question to build our sentence: "Liam het die katjie onder die groot groen vyeboom in hul agterplaas gekry."

Step 2: We Do (Ons doen dit saam)

Let's solve Question 2 together. Read the question aloud.

Interactive Prompts:

  • What does the question word "Waarom" ask for? (Answer: Why / A reason. We must look for words like "want" or "omdat").
  • Grab your highlighter. Which words in Question 2 should we highlight? (Expected answer: "Waarom", "Snoepie", "genoem").
  • Look at Paragraph 2. Can you find where the word "Snoepie" is? Read that sentence out loud.
  • Now, help me write the answer in a full sentence starting with: "Liam het die katjie Snoepie genoem, want..."
  • Formulated Answer: Liam het die katjie Snoepie genoem, want sy was so soet soos ’n lekkergoedjie.

Step 3: You Do (Jy doen dit self)

Now it's your turn to be the head detective! Write these answers down in your Speurder-notaboek. Remember your 3 steps and write in full sentences.

(Look at Paragraph 1)
Noem twee dinge. (Look at Paragraph 3)
  3. Vraag 5: Wat is die katjie se regte naam?

3. Conclusion & Wrap-up (10 Minutes)

Recap Challenge:

To close the case, the student must explain the 3-Stap Speurmetode back to the educator in their own words, or using simple hand gestures:

  1. Point to eyes (Look at the question/Highlight keywords).
  2. Mimic looking through a magnifying glass (Scan the text for clues).
  3. Mimic writing in the air (Write a full-sentence answer!).

Self-Reflection (Self-refleksie)

Rate your detective skills today! Draw one of these badges in your notebook:

  • 🕵️‍♂️ Top-Speurder (Master Detective): I found all clues and wrote complete sentences effortlessly!
  • 🔍 Speurder-in-Opleiding (Detective in Training): I found the clues but need a bit of help writing full Afrikaans sentences.

Assessment & Memorandump (Answers)

Formative Assessment Checkpoints

  • Did the student actively highlight keywords in the questions during the "We Do" phase?
  • Did the student point directly to where the answer was in the reading passage before writing?

Memorandum (For grading "You Do" activities)

(Award 1 mark for mentioning both 'koue' and 'reënerige' in a full sentence)
(Award 2 marks: 1 for the photo, 1 for the telephone number)
  3. Vraag 5: Die katjie se regte naam is eintlik Minki.
    (Award 1 mark)

Differentiation & Adaptability Options

For Learners Needing Support (Scaffolding)

  • Provide Sentence Starters for the answers (e.g., "Die weer op Saterdag was..." or "Die katjie se regte naam is...").
  • Focus on finding the paragraph first before reading the exact sentence.

For Advanced Learners (Extensions)

  • Ask the student to write an inference question (e.g., "How do we know Liam is a kind/caring person?"
  • Have them write a 3-sentence creative ending about what Minki did when she returned to Tannie Sarie.
