Lesson Plan Outline (45 Minutes)
1. The Hook: The Word Factory Grand Opening! (5 Minutes)
Goal: Grab attention and explain the "why."
Parent/Teacher Script: "Imagine you are launching a brand-new business! Today, your business is a Sentence Factory. To build the strongest, most popular sentences in the world, you need to hire five different types of workers. If one worker goes on strike, our sentences fall apart! Let's meet our five superstar workers so we can run a successful business!"
Check for Understanding: "What happens to a business if the workers don't know their jobs?" (Expected answer: Things get messy / the product breaks!)
2. Meeting the Workers (15 Minutes) - Direct Instruction ("I Do")
Introduce the five parts of speech using the double-theme of Business and the Bible.
💼 Worker 1: The NOUN (Red)
What it is: A person, place, thing, or idea. (The "Product" or the "Store")
Business Example: The customer bought lemonade at the stand.
Bible Example: David picked up a smooth stone.
⚡ Worker 2: The VERB (Blue)
What it is: An action word. What the noun does. (The "Operations" / physical work)
Business Example: We sell tasty treats and collect money.
Bible Example: Noah built a giant ark and saved the animals.
👤 Worker 3: The PRONOUN (Yellow)
What it is: A quick shortcut word that takes the place of a noun. (The "Substitute worker" like *he, she, it, they, we*)
Business Example: She designed the logo, and it looks fantastic!
Bible Example: Joseph forgave his brothers; then he gave them food.
🎨 Worker 4: The ADJECTIVE (Green)
What it is: A word that describes a noun. (The "Marketing / Decoration" — makes the product sound awesome!)
Business Example: We serve cold drinks to happy buyers.
Bible Example: The young shepherd boy defeated the giant soldier.
🚀 Worker 5: The ADVERB (Orange)
What it is: Describes a verb. Tells how, when, or where something is done. (The "Delivery Speed")
Business Example: Our team quickly fills every custom order.
Bible Example: Jesus kindly welcomed all of the little children.
3. Sentence Factory Inspection (10 Minutes) - Guided Practice ("We Do")
Activity: The Sentence Assembly Line
Write the following sentences on a whiteboard. Read them together, and have the student underline or circle words using colored markers matching the flashcards (or point to them on a screen).
Practice Sentence 1 (Business Theme):
"The smart entrepreneur gladly counts her profits."
- Smart = Adjective (describes entrepreneur)
- Entrepreneur = Noun (person)
- Gladly = Adverb (how she counts)
- Counts = Verb (action)
- Her = Pronoun (takes the place of the girl's name)
Practice Sentence 2 (Bible Theme):
"He carefully built a wooden boat."
- He = Pronoun (takes the place of Noah)
- Carefully = Adverb (how he built)
- Built = Verb (action)
- Wooden = Adjective (describes boat)
- Boat = Noun (thing)
4. Create Your Own Pitch! (10 Minutes) - Independent Practice ("You Do")
The Mission: The student is starting a new creative business (e.g., selling homemade cookies, painting custom pet rocks, or telling exciting Bible puppet plays). They must write a 3-sentence "sales pitch" to describe it.
Instructions:
- Choose a business name or product.
- Write down a 3-sentence advertisement pitch.
- Color-code or label one of each word-type in your sentences using the colors we learned!
Example Pitch:
"We sell sweet cookies. They taste amazing. Our kitchen always bakes perfection!"
5. Closing & Reflection (5 Minutes)
Recap: "Today, we unlocked the secret power of the 5 Word Workers. Without Nouns, Verbs, Pronouns, Adjectives, and Adverbs, our business and Bible stories would be incredibly boring!"
Reflection Prompt: "Which of the 5 word-workers was your favorite today, and why do you think it is the most important worker in the Sentence Factory?"
Assessment Opportunities
Formative Assessment (During Lesson):
- Flashcard Showdown: Hold up a word (e.g., "quickly", "cookie", "Jesus", "runs") and ask the student to hold up the corresponding color card as fast as they can.
Summative Assessment (End of Lesson):
The Exit Ticket Challenge:
Identify the underlined part of speech in each of the following sentences:
- "The shepherd patiently watched his sheep." (Answer: Adverb)
- "Our cookies are warm." (Answer: Adjective)
- "He trusted God completely." (Answer: Pronoun)
- "She sells handmade crafts." (Answer: Verb)
- "The customer entered the shop." (Answer: Noun)
Adaptability & Differentiation
For Extra Support
Focus only on Nouns and Verbs first. Cut out physical words from a magazine and sort them into "Things" (Nouns) vs "Actions" (Verbs). Add the other parts of speech once comfortable.
For an Extra Challenge
Have the student write a mini business proposal or a parables retold story using at least 3 adjectives and 3 adverbs, underlining them in different colors. Introduce prepositions if ready.
