Going on a Teddy Bear Picnic: An Interactive Adventure

Target Age: 4 Years Old (Preschool / Kindergarten)

Duration: 2 Hours (Can be adapted into shorter sessions)

Setting: Classroom, Homeschool Room, or Outdoor Play Area

Materials Needed

  • A favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal (brought by the student and teacher)
  • A cozy picnic blanket
  • A toy picnic basket (or a small box/tote bag)
  • Storybook: The Teddy Bears' Picnic (by Jimmy Kennedy) or We're Going on a Bear Hunt (by Michael Rosen)
  • Music player to play "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" song
  • For the Math Activity: Toy food items (or colored blocks/pompoms) of different colors and sizes
  • For the Craft Activity: Paper plates, brown washable paint or brown crayons, googly eyes (or black markers), brown construction paper (cut into ear shapes), glue sticks
  • For the Picnic Snack: Graham crackers, cream cheese or sunbutter, round banana slices, and blueberries (to build "bear faces" on crackers)

Learning Objectives & Success Criteria

What We Are Learning (Objectives) What Success Looks Like (Success Criteria)
Math: Counting to 5 with one-to-one correspondence and sorting items by attribute. The child can touch and count up to 5 picnic treats accurately and sort them by color or size.
Fine Motor: Developing finger strength and coordination through crafting and snack building. The child can use a glue stick to attach ears to a paper plate and arrange small banana slices on a cracker.
Social-Emotional: Practicing sharing, taking turns, and using polite table manners. The child uses words like "please" and "thank you" when offering a pretend treat to their teddy bear.

Lesson Plan Outline

1. Introduction & Circle Time: Welcome to the Picnic! (15 Minutes)

Objective: Spark excitement, introduce the teddy bear guests, and set the theme.

The Hook (5 mins)

Play the song "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" softly in the background. Invite the student to sit on the floor with their teddy bear.

Teacher/Parent Talking Points:

"Look who is here today! Our fuzzy, cuddly teddy bears! They whispered a little secret in my ear this morning... they told me their tummies are rumbling! Do you know what they want to do? They want to go on a picnic with us! Today, we are going to be best friends with our bears. We will read a story, make a special bear craft, play a counting game, and eat a real yummy bear snack together on our picnic blanket!"

Teddy Bear Introductions (10 mins)

Encourage the child to introduce their teddy bear to yours.

  • What is your bear's name?
  • Is your bear soft or bumpy? Big or small?
  • Give your bear a great big squeeze to welcome them to school today!
---

2. Storytime & Literacy (20 Minutes)

Objective: Build listening skills, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

Interactive Read-Aloud (15 mins)

Read The Teddy Bears' Picnic or your chosen bear-themed book. Use the "I Do, We Do, You Do" model for active reading:

  • I Do (Model): Read with high energy, changing your voice for different characters and pointing to the pictures as you read.
  • We Do (Guided Practice): Stop on pages with actions. Ask the student to mimic the characters. "Look, the bears are marching! Can you make your teddy bear march up and down on your knees?"
  • You Do (Independent Interaction): Ask the child to predict what comes next. "The bears are sitting down at the table. What do you think they want to eat? Let's ask your bear!"

Vocabulary Check (5 mins)

Introduce the word "Picnic" (eating food outside on a blanket) and "Fuzzy" (soft and hairy). Have the child feel their bear's fur and say: "My bear is fuzzy!"

---

3. Math & Cognitive Activity: Packing the Picnic Basket (25 Minutes)

Objective: Practice counting to 5, sorting by color/size, and following directions.

Step 1: The Sorting Game (10 mins) - We Do

Spread out various toy food items (or colored blocks representing food) on the floor.

Teacher/Parent Talking Points:

"Uh oh! Our picnic basket is totally empty, and the food is all messy! Bears love to be organized. Let's look at this food. Can you help me find all the green foods and put them in one pile? Now let's find all the red foods!"

Step 2: Counting the Treats (10 mins) - You Do

Ask the student to pack the basket with specific numbers of treats for their bear. Use physical touch (one-to-one correspondence).

  • "Can you pack exactly 3 yellow bananas for your bear? Let's count them together as they go in: One... Two... Three!"
  • "Now, can you pack 5 sweet red strawberries?" (Help point to each item to ensure they don't skip numbers).

Step 3: Quick Cleanup Check (5 mins)

Have the child carry the loaded basket to the designated "picnic spot" (the picnic blanket laid out in the room).

---

4. Active Movement Break: Bear Walk & Freeze Dance (15 Minutes)

Objective: Release energy, practice gross motor skills, and coordinate body movements.

  • The Bear Crawl: Show the child how to walk on hands and feet (not knees) like a big, heavy grizzly bear. Growl playfully!
  • The Tip-Toe Bear: Walk quietly on tip-toes so we don't wake up the sleeping bears.
  • Teddy Bear Freeze Dance: Play "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" song. When the music plays, dance with your teddy bear. When the music stops, FREEZE like a statue!
---

5. Creative Art: Paper Plate Teddy Bear Mask or Puppet (25 Minutes)

Objective: Exercise fine motor skills through coloring, gluing, and constructing.

Step-by-Step Guidance:

  1. Coloring/Painting (I Do & We Do): Model how to hold a crayon or paintbrush. Color the entire back of a paper plate brown. The student copies this on their plate.
  2. Adding the Face (We Do): Help the child glue two googly eyes (or draw two big black eyes) in the center of the plate. Glue a black pompom or draw a circle for the nose.
  3. Attaching the Ears (You Do): Give the child two brown paper ears. Have them apply glue using a glue stick to the bottom of the ears and press them onto the top edge of the paper plate.
  4. Playtime: Hold the plate up to your face and say: "Roar! I am a friendly teddy bear! What does your bear say?"
---

6. The Grand Teddy Bear Picnic & Snack Creation (20 Minutes)

Objective: Practice fine motor coordination (snack assembly) and social manners.

Building the "Bear Face" Snack (10 mins)

Sit together on the picnic blanket. Wash hands first!

  • Give the student a graham cracker square.
  • Spread a layer of cream cheese or sunbutter on the cracker (assist if needed, but let them try to use a plastic butter knife to practice spreading).
  • Place two banana round slices at the top corners to make "ears".
  • Place one banana slice in the center with a blueberry on top to make the "snout" and "nose".
  • Place two blueberries above the snout to make "eyes".

Social Roleplay & Eating (10 mins)

Before eating, practice sharing and politeness with the teddy bears.

Teacher/Parent Talking Points:

"Before we take a bite, let's feed our bears a pretend bite first! Say: 'Here you go, Bear!'. What does your bear say back? They say, 'Thank you!' Now we can eat our delicious bear snacks together!"
---

7. Conclusion & Reflection (10 Minutes)

Objective: Summarize what was learned and transition calmly to the next part of the day.

The Clean-Up Song (5 mins)

Sing a simple clean-up song while putting the picnic blanket and toy food away. "Clean up, clean up, everybody do your share!"

Recap Discussion (5 mins)

Hold your teddy bears close and ask the child:

  • What was your favorite part of our teddy bear picnic today?
  • How many treats did we count for our basket? (Encourage them to hold up fingers to show "5").
  • Let's give our teddy bears a giant hug and say, "Thanks for being my picnic buddy today!"

Differentiation Strategies

For Struggling Learners (Scaffolding):

  • Math: Keep counting limited to 1 through 3. Use physical "touch and slide" movements to separate counted items.
  • Art: Pre-draw circles on the paper plate where the eyes and nose should go so the child has a visual guide of where to glue.

For Advanced Learners (Extensions):

  • Math: Count up to 10 treats. Introduce simple subtraction: "If we have 5 treats and your bear eats 1, how many are left? Let's count them!"
  • Language Arts: Ask the child to dictate a short story about where their teddy bear lives, and write it down on the back of their paper plate craft.

Assessment Methods

  • Formative Assessment (During Activities): Observe the child during the sorting and counting game. Note if they can point to each object once as they count (one-to-one correspondence) or if they skip numbers.
  • Summative Assessment (During Picnic): Observe the child's social-emotional skills. Did they demonstrate politeness (using "please" and "thank you") and successfully interact with their bear during the roleplay?
