The "1% Better" Rule
Chris didn't train like a neurotypical triathlete overnight. His father helped him break down his training into tiny, manageable steps: getting 1% better every single day. If he could do 1 push-up today, tomorrow he aimed for 1% more effort. This method bypassed cognitive overload and focused entirely on consistent, structured adaptation.

In Physical Education, how do we make activities accessible for someone with an intellectual disability? We use the S.T.E.P. Framework. This is a design framework to modify any physical activity.
Modify the size of the court, distance to targets, or boundary lines to make play areas safer and more manageable.
Change the rules or expectations. (e.g., instead of catching, allow a bounce first; allow walking with the ball).
Use larger, lighter, softer, or brighter-colored balls. Use lower nets or wider targets.
Change how players interact. Use 1-on-1 guides, change team sizes, or play cooperative rather than competitive formats.

Let's do a quick physical and mental challenge to practice modifying games. Get your balloon or tennis ball and a household bucket. Set up a target toss from 10 feet away.
Active Task: "The S.T.E.P. Quick Shift"
- Step 1: Try tossing the tennis ball into the bucket from 10 feet away. Do this 5 times. Notice how much motor control and visual focus it takes.
- Step 2: Now, apply "E" (Equipment): Swap the tennis ball for a balloon. Toss it 5 times. Notice how the slower flight allows more reaction and adjustment time.
- Step 3: Apply "S" (Space): Move the bucket to just 3 feet away. Repeat.
- Analyze: Write down in your journal which modification lowered the cognitive load (mental energy needed to understand and execute the motor pattern) the most.
G. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills
Imagine you have been volunteered to coach a youth fitness group that includes a 12-year-old named Sam, who has Down syndrome. Sam has moderate difficulties with balance, tracking fast-moving objects, and remembering complex rule sets, but loves social engagement and cheering.
Your Task: Modify the classic game of Dodgeball so it is safe, fun, and physically beneficial for Sam, without making Sam feel isolated.
Draft your game plan in your workbook using these constraints:
- What type of ball will you use? (Equipment modification)
- What is the new rule for getting "out"? (Task modification)
- How can a peer buddy support Sam during play? (People modification)
