Dragons, Tacos, and No Spicy Salsa!
An Interactive Literature and Comprehension Adventure for "Dragons Love Tacos"
Materials Needed
- The picture book "Dragons Love Tacos" by Adam Rubin (illustrated by Daniel Salmieri). Note: A video read-aloud can be used as an alternative.
- 1 Paper plate (per student)
- Colored construction paper (Yellow for cheese, green for lettuce, brown for meat/beans, red for tomatoes)
- Scissors and glue sticks
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Printed "Dragon Taco Menu" worksheet (or a blank sheet of paper to design one)
- A small jar of mild salsa (real or a drawing) and a fresh jalapeño pepper (real or a drawing) for a visual hook

1. The Hook & Introduction (10 Minutes)
🔥 The Spicy Salsa Alert!
Hold up a real jar of salsa (or a picture) and a spicy jalapeño pepper. Ask the student: "Do you like salsa on your tacos? Is it mild, or is it super spicy? What happens to your tongue when you eat something really, really spicy?"
Set the Stage: Explain that today, we are going to learn a very important secret about dragons. Dragons love parties, and they absolutely adore tacos. In fact, they love tacos more than almost anything! But there is one giant mistake you can make when feeding a dragon. Today, we are going to read the story to find out what that mistake is, and learn how to host the perfect, fire-free dragon taco party.
2. Guided Learning & Practice (30 Minutes)
Phase 1: I Do (Active Read-Aloud & Modeling)
Read Dragons Love Tacos aloud to the student (or watch the read-aloud together). As you read, model active thinking and predicting by pausing at these key moments:
- Page 3 (Dragon Taco Love): Stop and say: "Wow! Look at all those tacos. Beef tacos, chicken tacos, giant tacos, and tiny tacos. The author says dragons love tacos because of the smell, the texture, and the crunch. Let's make a crunch sound together!"
- Page 11 (The Warning): Point to the jar of salsa. Read with dramatic emphasis: "But if a dragon eats spicy salsa... oh boy." Ask: "Look closely at the jar label. It says 'No Spicy Salsa' in tiny print. I wonder what is about to happen?"
- Page 19 (The Disaster): After the dragons eat the spicy salsa, look at the illustration of the house on fire. Ask: "What caused this fire? Let's trace the steps: Step 1: There were tiny green jalapeño peppers in the salsa. Step 2: The boy didn't read the fine print. Step 3: The dragons ate it. Step 4: Red-hot dragon breath!" (This models cause and effect).
Phase 2: We Do (Interactive Comprehension & "Taco Build" Game)
Now, let's check our understanding of the story by building a "Comprehension Taco."
🌮 The Comprehension Taco Challenge:
Give the student their folded paper plate (the "Taco Shell"). For each correct answer to the questions below, the student gets to add a colorful construction paper topping to their taco!
- Question 1 (Meat/Beans - Brown Paper): Why do dragons love tacos? What are some things they like about them?
(Expected Answer: They like the smell, the crunchy shell, and they like beef or chicken toppings.) - Question 2 (Lettuce - Green Paper): What is the one thing dragons hate more than anything?
(Expected Answer: Spicy salsa!) - Question 3 (Cheese - Yellow Paper): What happens physically to a dragon when they accidentally eat spicy salsa?
(Expected Answer: They get sparks out of their noses, smoke from their ears, tummy troubles, and they breathe giant fire!) - Question 4 (Mild Tomatoes - Red Paper): At the end of the story, why do the dragons help the boy rebuild his house?
(Expected Answer: Because they are nice, they wanted to help, and they wanted to eat more tacos during work breaks!)
Now, have the student glue their earned ingredients inside their folded paper plate shell to complete their physical "Comprehension Taco."
Phase 3: You Do (Independent Application & Creative Menu Design)
Provide the student with a blank sheet of paper or a printed menu template. Direct them to become a professional "Dragon Caterer."
Instructions:
- Design a menu for a "Dragon Taco Party."
- The menu must feature at least three different tacos that are guaranteed 100% dragon-safe.
- Each taco must have a fun name (e.g., "The Mild Mild West Taco," "The Crunchy Chicken Surprise," "The Sweet Cheese Delight").
- Below each menu item, the student must write or draw the ingredients used. Crucial Rule: They must prove that none of their ingredients contain spicy elements by drawing a red slash (🚫) over a jalapeño pepper on their menu as a safety warning.
3. Wrap-Up & Assessment (10 Minutes)
Recap (Tell Them What You Taught):
Review the main lessons of the day. Ask the student: "If a dragon is coming to your house for lunch today, what are the three most important rules you need to remember?" (e.g., Have lots of tacos, keep the salsa mild, check the fine print on the jars!).
