Lesson Plan
1. Introduction: Hook & Objectives (10 Minutes)
The Scenario: "Imagine you are hiking in the mountains. The sun goes down faster than expected, the temperature drops to 40°F, and a cold rain starts pouring. You have a backpack with cordage and a tarp, but no cabin in sight. What is your absolute first priority to stay alive?"
Discussion & The "Rule of 3s":
Discuss the survival framework with the student:
- You can survive 3 minutes without air.
- You can survive 3 hours without shelter in extreme conditions (hypothermia is the #1 danger!).
- You can survive 3 days without water.
- You can survive 3 weeks without food.
Teacher Talking Point (11-Year-Old Appropriate): "A lot of people think food or fire is the first thing you need in the wild. But if you get soaking wet and super cold, hypothermia can set in before you even light a match! Today, you are going to learn how to master shelter engineering using real bushcraft knots so you can stay dry, warm, and safe in any situation."
2. Body: Content & Practice (55 Minutes)
Phase A: Direct Instruction — "I Do" (15 Minutes)
Concept 1: The Physics of Insulation & Structure
- Demonstrate why an A-frame shape sheds water efficiently (gravity + angled slopes).
- Explain trapped dead air space: "Insulation isn't just about thick stuff; it's about trapping air! Dry leaves and pine needles trap pockets of air that your body heat warms up, just like the fluff inside your winter jacket."
Concept 2: Master Knots Demonstration
- Knot 1: Taut-Line Hitch (The Adjustable Tensioner)
Show how this knot slides to tighten a tarp line, then locks into place under tension. - Knot 2: Square Lashing (The Frame Builder)
Demonstrate binding two perpendicular sticks using wraps and "frapping" (wrapping tightly between the sticks to tighten the joint).
Phase B: Guided Practice — "We Do" (15 Minutes)
Activity: Knot-Tying Lab & Skeleton Frame Setup

Task Instructions: Set a timer for 20 minutes. The student must independently build a complete emergency shelter capable of housing one person using the provided materials.
Step-by-Step Student Instructions:
- Secure the Tarp/Roofing: Drape the tarp or emergency blanket over your ridgepole. Use paracord and the Taut-Line Hitch to anchor the guy-lines to ground stakes or anchor points.
- Apply Debris / Insulation Layer:
- If Outdoors: Pile dry leaves, pine needles, or ferns over the frame. Make the layer at least 6 inches thick (the thickness from your fingertip to your wrist!). Don't forget ground insulation—pack a thick layer of dry debris inside to sit on so the cold ground doesn't steal your body heat.
- If Indoors: Layer blankets and cushions over the frame, placing a thick mat/sleeping bag on the floor for ground insulation.
- Check Safety & Entry: Ensure the entrance faces away from the prevailing wind direction.
3. Conclusion: Testing, Reflection & Recap (10 Minutes)
The Survival Field Test:
- The Wind Test: Use a large piece of cardboard or an electric fan to blast simulated wind at the shelter frame. Does it hold firm?
- The Water Shedding Test: Spray the shelter roof with a spray bottle filled with water (or light drizzle from a garden hose outdoors) for 30 seconds while the student sits inside. Does the inside stay dry?
