Investigative Reporter for a Day: Uncovering Science & Data Stories

Integrating IXL Math, Science, and English with Journalism

Materials Needed

Objectives (By the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to):

  1. Math (IXL Data Interpretation): Analyze a scientific graph or data table to extract at least two key mathematical findings (averages, trends, or percentages).
  2. Science (IXL Cause & Effect): Identify a core scientific concept (e.g., ecosystem disruption, weather patterns) and explain the main cause and effect.
  3. English & Journalism: Draft a 3-paragraph "Inverted Pyramid" news article using correct grammar, active voice, and proper quote attribution.

  • ✔ My article has a catchy headline that grabs the reader's attention.
  • ✔ The first paragraph includes the 5 Ws (Who, What, When, Where, Why).
  • ✔ I included at least 1 accurate math statistic from my data sheet.
  • ✔ I included at least 1 accurate scientific fact explaining the "Why."
  • ✔ My article is edited using correct punctuation for quotes and strong verbs.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction: The Hook & Press Briefing (10 Minutes)

Talking Points for Educator/Mentor:

"FLASH NEWS! We just received a urgent dispatch from the Field Research Station. Something unusual is happening with the local honeybee population, and the town needs answers. As an investigative journalist, your job isn't just to write words—it's to read the numbers, understand the science, and tell a story that makes people care. Today, you're on the assignment desk!"
  • Discussion Question: "When you read or watch the news, what makes you trust the reporter? How do numbers and science help prove a news story is true?"
  • Goal Setting: Explain that today's mission combines Math data decoding, Science fact-checking, and Journalism storytelling into one published report.

2. Content & Guided Practice: "I Do, We Do, You Do" (40 Minutes)

Step A: I Do - Anatomy of a Data Story (10 Minutes)

Instruction: Introduce the Inverted Pyramid structure used in professional journalism:

  • Lead Paragraph (Top): Most important facts (Who, What, When, Where, Why).
  • Body Paragraph (Middle): Data evidence (Math) and Scientific explanation (Science).
  • Tail Paragraph (Bottom): What happens next / Call to action.

Demonstration: Show a sample IXL Math graph (e.g., Line graph showing temperature changes over 5 years) and model how to turn data into a sentence.

Example: "Instead of writing 'It got hotter,' a reporter writes: 'Data shows local temperatures rose by 3.5 degrees over five years, marking a 15% increase.'"

Step B: We Do - The Science & Math Investigation (15 Minutes)

Work together using an IXL skill set or a prepared case file on an environmental mystery (e.g., "The Case of the Missing Pollinators"):

  1. Math Check (IXL Math Connection): Look at a simple bar graph or table together. Calculate the difference in bee hive counts between Year 1 and Year 3. (Skill: Interpreting double bar graphs / Percentage change).
  2. Science Check (IXL Science Connection): Review a short text on plant pollination and pesticide impact. (Skill: Identifying ecosystem interactions and human impacts).
  3. English Check (IXL English Connection): Practice adding a direct quote from a mock scientist using proper punctuation.
    Drafting together: Dr. Maya Lin stated, "Without these pollinators, 40% of local crops could fail."

Step C: You Do - The Deadline Assignment (15 Minutes)

Set a timer for 12-15 minutes ("Press Deadline!"). The learner independently drafts their short news article using the provided reporter template.

Article Requirements:

  • Headline: Catchy, action-oriented header.
  • Paragraph 1: The Lead (5 Ws).
  • Paragraph 2: The Science & Math Evidence (1 graph stat + 1 science cause/effect).
  • Paragraph 3: The Quote & What's Next.

Self-Correction/Editing Check: Complete a quick 2-minute IXL English grammar check—verify that all action verbs are strong and quotes have correct comma placement.

3. Conclusion: The Live Broadcast & Reflection (10 Minutes)

  • On-Air Report: The learner presents their completed article out loud as a TV anchor or read-aloud news report.
  • Peer/Teacher Feedback: Highlight one strong math stat integration, one great vocabulary word, and one excellent science explanation.
  • Recap Prompt: "How did using real numbers and scientific facts make your news story more powerful than just giving an opinion?"
