Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic structure of the Japanese government and the rights and responsibilities of Japanese citizens.

Materials and Prep

• Internet access
• Pen and paper
• Printed copies of the Japanese Constitution (can be found online)

Activities

1. Research the Japanese Government

   Using the internet, research and find information about the structure of the Japanese government. Take notes on the different branches and levels of government.

2. Explore the Japanese Constitution

   Print out a copy of the Japanese Constitution or access it online. Read through the Constitution and highlight or underline important sections related to the rights and responsibilities of Japanese citizens.

3. Create a Comparison Chart

   Create a chart that compares the Japanese government structure to the government structure in the student's own country. Include similarities and differences in the branches, levels, and powers of government.

4. Reflect and Discuss

   Write a short reflection on the importance of understanding the government and being an informed citizen. Discuss the reflection with a parent or guardian.
