Operation Codebreaker: Solving Multi-Step Equations

Target Duration: 15 Minutes | Audience: Upper Elementary / Middle School (Adaptable for Homeschool, Classroom, or Tutoring)

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers (or paper and two different colored highlighters)
  • "Mission Log" sheet or notebook paper
  • Optional: A small box or envelope with a target number inside (for hook)

Learning Objectives

By the end of this 15-minute lesson, the learner will be able to solve a multi-step algebraic equation involving like terms and inverse operations with 100% accuracy on the final challenge problem.

Success Criteria

  • I can group "like terms" on the same side of the equal sign.
  • I can use inverse operations in reverse order (SADMEP) to isolate the variable.
  • I can check my answer by plugging it back into the equation.

1. Hook & Introduction (2 Minutes)

The Scenario: "Imagine variable x is a secret treasure locked inside a series of nested boxes. To get to x, we have to unwrap the layers in the exact reverse order they were put on!"

The Golden Rule: What you do to one side of the equal sign, you must do to the other to keep the equation balanced.

2. Direct Instruction: "I Do" (3 Minutes)

Teacher Models Equation: 3x + 4x - 5 = 16

  1. Step 1: Combine Like Terms. Highlight or group terms that look alike (3x and 4x). Combine them to get 7x.
    New Equation: 7x - 5 = 16
  2. Step 2: Undo Subtraction (Inverse Operation). Add 5 to both sides.
    7x = 21
  3. Step 3: Undo Multiplication. Divide both sides by 7.
    x = 3
  4. Step 4: Check Code! Substitute 3 into original: $3(3) + 4(3) - 5 = 9 + 12 - 5 = 16$. Code cracked!

3. Guided Practice: "We Do" (4 Minutes)

Interactive Challenge Equation: 5x - 2x + 8 = 20

Guide the student using prompt questions:

  • "Which terms on the left are matching code pieces?" (Student identifies 5x and -2x to get 3x).
  • "What is our next outer layer to remove?" (Student decides to subtract 8 from both sides → 3x = 12).
  • "How do we unlock the final variable?" (Student divides by 3 → x = 4).

4. Independent Mission: "You Do" (4 Minutes)

Hand the student their Final Mission Code to solve independently on paper/board:

Mission Code: 2x + 4x - 6 = 18

Task: Show all 3 steps (Combine, Undo Addition/Subtraction, Undo Multiplication) and verify your answer!

(Answer Key for Instructor: 6x - 6 = 18 → 6x = 24 → x = 4. Verification: 2(4)+4(4)-6 = 8+16-6 = 18)

5. Closure & Reflection (2 Minutes)

  • Quick Verbal Recap: Ask the student: "What are the three steps we take to unwrap a multi-step equation?"
  • Self-Assessment: Have the student rate their confidence from 1 (Needs Practice) to 5 (Master Codebreaker).

Adaptability & Differentiation Options

For Extra Support (Scaffolding):

Use colored highlighters—yellow for terms with $x$, green for constants (plain numbers). Draw vertical lines through the equal sign to clearly keep sides balanced.

For Advanced Extension:

Introduce an equation requiring the Distributive Property first, such as $2(x + 3) + 4 = 16$, or place variables on both sides ($3x + 4 = x + 12$).
