Week 5 Capstone Lesson — Applying the Novel to a Real-World Conservation and Community Design Project

Bridge from Previous Learning
Troy has now completed the main story arc of The Wind in the Willows. Earlier lessons introduced the River Bank, Mole, Ratty, Toad, the Wild Wood, Badger, travel, danger, friendship, and courage. He then studied consequences, repentance, community action, restoration, conservation, bird anatomy, bird flight, mapping, budgeting, chess planning, and Minecraft construction.
This week moves from understanding the story to transferring its ideas to a new situation. Troy will design a safe, sustainable animal habitat and community travel plan inspired by the novel. He will use evidence from the book, scientific information about birds, mathematics, Catholic social teaching, strategic thinking, and his completed Minecraft world.

Review and Hook — 10 minutes
- Ask Troy to place five cards in order: setting, conflict, consequences, teamwork, restoration.
- Review one example from the novel for each card.
- Ask: “If the River Bank were a real community, what problem would need attention first?”
- Introduce the week’s challenge: design a community that allows animals and people to live safely together.
Language Arts: Theme and Evidence — 15 minutes

You Do: Troy writes or records a claim supported by two events from the novel.
Success criterion: The claim names a theme and includes two accurate story references.
Social Studies: Community Needs — 15 minutes
Create a needs-and-resources chart for the River Bank community.
- Needs: shelter, food, transportation, safety, clean water, recreation, wildlife protection.
- Resources: river, woodland, roads, railway, homes, farms, community buildings, natural materials.
Discuss how Toad’s choices affected other community members and how shared rules can protect everyone.
Minecraft: Design Brief — 25 minutes
Troy writes a short design brief for a new “River Bank Nature and Community Reserve.” It must include:
- One safe residential area
- One protected bird habitat
- A waterway or wetland
- A transportation route
- An emergency shelter or meeting place
- Rules explaining how residents and visitors should behave
He chooses a location in the existing world and marks it with signs or a map.
Chess: Planning Before Moving — 15 minutes
Review the planning question: “What is my opponent threatening?”
Play a short position in which Troy must identify the goal, the threat, and the best candidate move before moving a piece. Connect this to planning the Minecraft reserve before building.

Tuesday: Measuring and Budgeting a Sustainable Community
Focus: Using mathematics to make realistic design decisions.
Review — 5 minutes
Review scale, area, percentages, and the previous 1,200-coin restoration budget. Troy explains why a reserve fund is useful.
Math: Land Allocation and Budget — 25 minutes
Give Troy a design area of 12,000 square meters and a budget of 2,000 community coins.
Allocate the land:
- 40% protected woodland
- 25% wetland and river habitat
- 15% homes and community buildings
- 10% paths and transportation
- 10% emergency, observation, and recreation areas
Allocate the budget:
- 30% habitat protection
- 25% roads, bridges, or railway
- 20% buildings and shelter
- 15% food and emergency supplies
- 10% reserve funds
Troy calculates the area and cost of each category. He may use a calculator and a formula card.
Science: Bird Habitat Requirements — 20 minutes
Building on bird skeletons, feathers, respiratory systems, muscles, vocal anatomy, and camouflage, Troy identifies what a bird habitat must provide:
- Food sources
- Clean water
- Nesting or shelter areas
- Safe flight and feeding space
- Protection from predators and excessive noise
- Seasonal resources
Troy selects two local birds and creates a comparison card showing each bird’s anatomy, diet, preferred habitat, and one conservation need.
Art: Scaled Site Plan — 20 minutes
On graph paper, Troy creates a top-down plan using a chosen scale, such as 1 centimeter = 10 meters or 1 Minecraft block = 2 meters.
The plan must include a title, scale, compass rose, key, habitat zones, buildings, roads, water, and wildlife areas.
Board Game: Trekking the National Parks — 20–30 minutes
Play while emphasizing resource management and route planning. Before each major decision, Troy explains whether he is prioritizing distance, conservation, collecting resources, or completing a long-term goal.
Wednesday: Stewardship, Rules, and Ethical Choices
Focus: Creating rules that balance freedom, responsibility, and the common good.
Review and Discussion — 10 minutes
Review the difference between a personal choice and a choice that affects a whole community. Compare Toad’s reckless driving with the need for safe transportation rules.
Catholic Bible Study: Stewardship and the Common Good — 20 minutes
Read and discuss:
- Genesis 2:15 — caring for and cultivating creation
- Matthew 22:37–39 — love of God and neighbor
- Micah 6:8 — justice, mercy, and humility
Discuss:
- What does it mean to care for creation rather than simply use it?
- How can a rule protect both freedom and the common good?
- How would the characters respond to a community charter?
Troy writes five community rules and explains the purpose of each.
Language Arts: Persuasive Writing — 20 minutes
Troy writes a short proposal to the River Bank Council requesting approval for the reserve.
The proposal includes:
- A clear request
- Two facts from bird science
- One mathematical reason involving area or budget
- One connection to a theme from the novel
- A concluding recommendation
Minecraft: Rules in Action — 25 minutes
Begin construction of the reserve. Add signs, fences, paths, gates, protected nesting areas, and a community notice board displaying Troy’s rules.
Include one design choice that prevents a conflict, such as separating a busy road from a nesting area.
Chess: Coordination and Protection — 15 minutes
Set up a position where a king, rook, bishop, or knight must protect a vulnerable piece or defend an important square.
Troy explains how coordinated pieces resemble community members using different strengths to protect a shared home.
Thursday: Engineering, Music, and Environmental Impact
Focus: Improving a design by testing how one system affects another.
Review — 10 minutes
Troy reviews his site plan and identifies one possible weakness. Examples include excessive travel distance, habitat fragmentation, insufficient shelter, or an overused budget.
Math and Engineering: Test the Route — 20 minutes
Choose two locations in the Minecraft world and calculate:
- The distance between them using the map scale
- Travel time by walking, boat, and minecart
- The cost in blocks or resources to build the route
Troy improves the route while protecting at least one wildlife zone.
Extension: Calculate the percentage of the reserve affected by the transportation route.
Science and Social Studies: Human Impact — 20 minutes
Compare two choices:
- Building a direct road through woodland
- Building a longer route around the protected habitat
Troy lists the benefits and costs of each option, then recommends one using scientific and community evidence.
Music: A Sound Map of the Community — 15 minutes
Revisit the peaceful qualities of The Lark Ascending and the mechanical energy of Pacific 231.
Troy creates a four-part sound plan:
- River Bank and peaceful nature
- Wild Wood and mystery
- Roads, trains, or human activity
- Community restoration and celebration
He may perform the plan with instruments, household objects, voice, a digital music tool, or Minecraft note blocks.
Minecraft: Functional Systems — 25 minutes

Troy tests each feature and records whether it works as intended.

Minecraft Capstone Presentation — 30 minutes
Troy gives a guided tour of the completed River Bank Nature and Community Reserve. The tour should explain:
- How the design connects to the novel
- Why the habitats were placed where they are
- How scale, area, and budget affected the design
- How the community rules promote safety and stewardship
- How at least two Redstone or transportation features work
- Which design problem he encountered and how he solved it
Chess and Board Game Closure — 20–30 minutes
Play a short chess game or solve a final puzzle. Troy must use at least two strategies from the unit, such as center control, castling, prophylaxis, coordination, defense, or endgame planning.
Finish with Trekking the National Parks or Wingspan. Troy explains one decision using the language of conservation, resources, planning, or teamwork.
