Geometry Quest: Transformations, Symmetry and Secret Patterns

Materials Needed

  • Paper or a digital drawing app
  • Pencil, coloured pencils or stylus
  • Ruler and optional protractor
  • Scissors and transparent paper or tracing paper, if available
  • Small objects such as a toy, book, mug or game piece
  • Grid paper, printed or drawn by hand
  • Optional: mirror, camera or tablet

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, Billy will be able to:

  • Describe a translation, reflection and rotation in clear mathematical language.
  • Identify transformations in everyday patterns, objects and designs.
  • Apply at least two transformations to create a repeating geometric design.
  • Explain how the original shape and transformed shape are alike and different.
  • Reflect on which strategy worked best and where the idea could be used next.

Success Criteria

Success can look different for different learners. Billy is successful if he can:

  • Correctly identify at least two of the three transformations.
  • Use words such as slide, flip, turn, angle, line of reflection or direction.
  • Create a pattern that repeats using a shape and at least two transformations.
  • Describe what stayed the same, such as size and shape.
  • Share one idea, drawing, explanation or photo as evidence of learning.

PDA-Friendly Learning Choices

  • Billy may choose to draw on paper, use a digital app, move objects, or explain ideas aloud.
  • Use invitations such as “Would you like to try…” instead of commands.
  • Offer a choice of starting points: real-world noticing, a quick challenge or making a design.
  • Allow thinking time, movement breaks and a quiet workspace.
  • Use “not yet” language if something feels difficult. Mistakes are useful clues.
  • Billy may complete the core task, choose an extension, or stop after recording what he discovered.

Introduction: Get Curious

Hook: The Shape-Shifting Logo

Show Billy a simple shape, such as a triangle, arrow or letter “L.” Move it across the page, flip it, and turn it.

Ask:

  • “Is it still the same shape after it moves?”
  • “What changed: the size, the shape, the position or the direction?”
  • “How might a game designer, architect or artist use this?”

Explain:

Geometry transformations are ways of moving or changing the position of a shape. The shape may slide, flip or turn while keeping its size and basic shape.

Today’s learning map: We will notice transformations, discover the rules behind them, use them to make a pattern, and think about where else they might be useful.

Body: Learn and Practise

1. I Do: Meet the Three Transformations

Draw a small arrow or triangle on grid paper. Demonstrate each transformation slowly.

Translation: A Slide

A translation moves every point the same distance in the same direction. The shape does not turn or flip.

Example: Move the triangle 4 squares right and 2 squares up.

Helpful question: “How far and in which direction did every point move?”

Reflection: A Flip

A reflection flips a shape over a line, called the line of reflection. It is like seeing the shape in a mirror.

Example: Flip the triangle over a vertical line. Each point should be the same distance from the line on the opposite side.

Helpful question: “Where is the mirror line, and are matching points equally far from it?”

Rotation: A Turn

A rotation turns a shape around a fixed point called the centre of rotation.

Example: Turn the triangle 90 degrees clockwise around one corner or a marked centre.

Helpful question: “Which point stays in place, and how many degrees did the shape turn?”

Key idea: A translation, reflection or rotation keeps the shape the same size and shape. These movements are called rigid transformations.

2. Quick Check: What Happened?

Draw or act out each movement. Billy may answer by speaking, pointing, writing T, F or R, or moving an object.

  1. A game piece moves 5 spaces to the left without turning. What transformation is this?
  2. A butterfly’s left wing matches its right wing across its body. What transformation helps describe this?
  3. A clock hand moves from 12 to 3. What transformation is this?
  4. A shape becomes twice as large. Is this one of today’s three rigid transformations? Why or why not?

Answers: 1. Translation. 2. Reflection. 3. Rotation. 4. No. The size changed, so it is not a rigid transformation.

3. We Do: Transformation Detective

Choose one option:

  • Object option: Use a toy, book or small object and physically move it.
  • Grid option: Draw a triangle, arrow or unusual shape on grid paper.
  • Digital option: Use a drawing or presentation app with copy, flip and rotate tools.
  • Body option: Make a shape with your hands or arms and demonstrate a slide, flip or turn.

Complete the following together:

  1. Make or choose a shape with at least three corners.
  2. Copy the shape.
  3. Try a translation, reflection and rotation.
  4. After each movement, check:
    • Did the size stay the same?
    • Did the shape stay the same?
    • Did the position or direction change?

Think-pair-share alternative: Billy can first think quietly, then explain to a parent, tutor or imaginary design team how he knows which transformation occurred.

4. Find the Pattern: Discover the Rules

Invite Billy to examine a tiled floor, wallpaper, sports logo, road sign, game map or clothing pattern. A photograph or memory of one is also fine.

Use these questions:

  • “Can you find a shape that repeats?”
  • “Does the shape slide, flip or turn?”
  • “What stays the same?”
  • “What changes?”
  • “Could you predict where the next shape will go?”

Record one observation using this sentence frame:

“I think this pattern uses a __________ because the shape __________.”

5. You Do: Create a Secret Geometry Design

Billy may choose one of the following design missions.

Mission A: Pattern Tile

  1. Draw an unusual shape inside a square.
  2. Copy the shape beside it using a translation.
  3. Flip or rotate another copy.
  4. Colour the design to make a repeating tile.

Mission B: Game Map

  1. Design a small game map with a triangle, arrow or symbol.
  2. Use a translation to create safe zones or stepping stones.
  3. Use a reflection to create a balanced area.
  4. Use a rotation to create a central obstacle or portal.
  5. Add labels showing which transformation was used.

Mission C: Logo Lab

  1. Create a logo for a club, game, pet or imaginary planet.
  2. Start with one simple geometric shape.
  3. Use at least two transformations.
  4. Give the logo a name and explain the design choices.

Design challenge: Try to use all three transformations. If that feels like too much, use two transformations carefully.

Helpful planning questions:

  • Which shape will be your starting shape?
  • Which transformation will you try first?
  • How will you show the movement clearly?
  • Will your design be symmetrical, repeating, balanced or surprising?

6. Feedback and Improve

Billy can show the design to a parent, tutor or learning partner, or review it privately using this checklist:

  • My starting shape is easy to see.
  • I used at least two transformations.
  • I labelled each transformation correctly.
  • The shape kept the same size and basic shape.
  • My pattern or logo has a clear purpose or idea.

Choose one improvement:

  • Add a label or arrow showing movement.
  • Make the repeated shapes line up more accurately.
  • Try a different rotation angle.
  • Add symmetry or colour coding.
  • Explain the design more clearly.

Optional Follow-Up Activity

Go on a “Transformation Hunt.” Find five examples at home or outside. Record the object, sketch it, and label the transformation you notice. Possible examples include a tiled floor, a mirror image, a bicycle wheel, a repeating fence pattern, a logo or a game board.
