The Amazing Number 1: Math Patterns, Powers, and Real-Life Uses

Materials Needed

  • Pencil and paper or a notebook
  • Number cards labeled 0–10, or small slips of paper with numbers
  • 10–20 small objects for counting, such as buttons, blocks, coins, or LEGO pieces
  • Dice or a digital dice roller
  • Optional: calculator, colored pencils, and a timer

Big idea: The number 1 may be small, but it plays important roles in counting, multiplication, division, fractions, measurement, and everyday life.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain at least three important mathematical roles of the number 1.
  • Use the identity property to solve multiplication and addition problems involving 1.
  • Recognize 1 as a whole and connect it to simple fractions.
  • Apply the number 1 to a real-life situation, such as measuring, budgeting, or organizing objects.
  • Create and explain a short “Number 1” challenge or puzzle.

Success Criteria

Successful work will include:

  • Correctly explaining that multiplying a number by 1 leaves the number unchanged.
  • Correctly explaining that adding 1 increases a number by one.
  • Showing that one whole can be divided into equal fractional parts.
  • Using words, numbers, drawings, or objects to explain mathematical thinking.
  • Completing the exit challenge with at least 4 out of 5 correct responses.

Introduction: The Mystery of One

Hook: “Could One Be a Superhero?”

Show the learner one object, such as one block or one coin. Ask:

  • “What can we do with just one object?”
  • “What happens when we add one more?”
  • “What happens when we multiply a group by one?”
  • “Can one object represent a whole?”

Invite the learner to make a prediction: “The number 1 is important because…”

Explain: “Today we will investigate the number 1 and discover how it works in counting, operations, fractions, measurement, and real life.”

Body: Explore and Practice

Part 1: I Do — The Many Jobs of 1

Use objects, drawings, or number sentences while modeling each idea.

Job 1: 1 as a Counting Unit

Explain that counting begins with one. Each number tells how many groups of one there are.

  • 1 object = one
  • 5 objects = five groups of one
  • 10 objects = ten groups of one

Model counting objects one at a time. Say: “When I count, I match one number word to one object.”

Job 2: 1 in Addition

Model:

6 + 1 = 7

Explain that adding 1 means moving forward one step on a number line or finding the next number.

Job 3: 1 in Multiplication

Model:

8 × 1 = 8

Explain that multiplying by 1 means having one group of the number. This is called the identity property of multiplication: multiplying a number by 1 keeps its identity or value the same.

Model with objects: “One group of eight is still eight.”

Job 4: 1 in Division

Model:

9 ÷ 1 = 9

Explain that dividing by 1 means separating the amount into groups of one. The number of groups is the same as the original amount.

Job 5: 1 as a Whole

Draw a rectangle and label the entire rectangle 1 whole. Divide it into two equal sections and label each section 1/2.

Explain: “The whole item is 1. When we divide it into equal parts, the parts are fractions of 1.”

Ask the learner to answer orally or write responses:

  1. What is 4 + 1?
  2. What is 7 × 1?
  3. What is 10 ÷ 1?
  4. If a pizza is one whole and is cut into four equal pieces, what fraction is one piece?

Part 2: We Do — Number 1 Investigation

Work together to complete the activities. Encourage the learner to explain how they know each answer.

Activity A: Build It with Objects

  1. Make one group of 3 objects. Write the matching multiplication sentence.
  2. Make one group of 6 objects. Write the matching multiplication sentence.
  3. Make one group of 10 objects. Write the matching multiplication sentence.

Guide the learner toward sentences such as:

  • 1 × 3 = 3
  • 1 × 6 = 6
  • 1 × 10 = 10

Activity B: True or False?

Read each statement. The learner gives a thumbs-up for true or a thumbs-down for false, then explains the answer.

  1. 5 × 1 = 5
  2. 1 + 8 = 8
  3. 12 ÷ 1 = 12
  4. 1 whole can be divided into equal fractions.
  5. Multiplying by 1 changes a number into 1.

Activity C: Real-Life “One” Hunt

Look around the home and find examples of the number 1. Possible examples include:

  • One minute on a timer
  • One cup of water
  • One dollar
  • One item in a package
  • One whole piece of fruit
  • One step in a set of directions

Choose two examples and explain how the number 1 is being used.

Part 3: You Do — Number 1 Challenge Stations

Complete at least three challenges. A learner may choose which challenges to attempt.

Challenge 1: Roll and Multiply

  1. Roll a die or use a digital dice roller.
  2. Write the number rolled.
  3. Multiply it by 1.
  4. Explain why the answer stayed the same.

Challenge 2: Fraction Folding

  1. Draw or fold a paper rectangle to represent one whole.
  2. Divide it into 2, 3, 4, or 8 equal parts.
  3. Label one part as a fraction.
  4. Explain how all the parts together equal 1 whole.

Challenge 3: One-Step Directions

Write a set of directions that uses the number 1. Examples:

  • Take one step forward.
  • Add one spoonful of sugar.
  • Read one page.
  • Put one coin in the jar.

Ask someone else to follow the directions exactly.

Challenge 4: Missing Number Puzzle

Fill in the missing number:

  1. 9 × 1 = ___
  2. ___ × 1 = 13
  3. 6 + 1 = ___
  4. ___ ÷ 1 = 15
  5. 1 whole = ___ halves

Challenge 5: Create a Number 1 Riddle

Create a riddle using at least three clues about the number 1. For example:

I am added to a number to find the next number. Multiplying by me keeps a number the same. I can represent a whole. What number am I?

During the lesson, check understanding by:

  • Asking the learner to explain answers rather than only state them.
  • Watching whether the learner correctly groups objects.
  • Checking fraction drawings for equal parts.
  • Using “Show me with objects,” “Show me with a drawing,” or “Tell me in words.”
