Work together to create fraction pizzas.
- Choose a denominator: 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8.
- Divide a paper circle into that many equal parts.
- Choose a numerator that is smaller than or equal to the denominator.
- Shade or decorate that number of pieces.
- Write the fraction represented by the pizza.
Complete at least three examples together. Encourage the learner to explain each answer using this sentence frame:
“My pizza has ___ equal parts, and ___ parts are shaded, so the fraction is ___/___.”
3. Fraction Topping Game
Use small paper shapes as toppings. Take turns drawing a fraction card or choosing a fraction.
The player must:
- Divide a pizza into equal parts based on the denominator.
- Place toppings on the number of pieces shown by the numerator.
- Say the fraction aloud.
- Explain whether more or less than half of the pizza is covered.
Example: For 5/8, divide the pizza into 8 equal pieces and place toppings on 5 pieces. Since 5 is greater than 4, 5/8 is more than one-half.
