Fold a piece of paper in half. Open it and point out the two equal parts.

Write 1/2 and explain:
- The denominator is the bottom number. It tells how many equal parts make the whole.
- The numerator is the top number. It tells how many parts we are describing or using.
Fold another paper into four equal parts. Shade one part and label it 1/4. Shade three parts on another drawing and label it 3/4.
Emphasize that the parts must be equal. If one part is larger than another, the drawing does not accurately show fourths.

- Write the matching fraction beneath each model.
Work together to compare pairs of fractions with the same denominator:
- 2/6 and 5/6
- 3/8 and 1/8
- 7/10 and 4/10
Guide the learner to notice that when the denominators are the same, the fraction with the greater numerator represents more parts.
