One Whole, Many Parts: A Fraction Adventure

Materials Needed

  • Paper or a notebook
  • Pencil, crayons, or colored pencils
  • Several pieces of paper to cut or fold
  • Scissors
  • A ruler
  • Optional: LEGO bricks, crackers, fruit, or measuring cups
  • Optional digital alternative: drawing or fraction app

Introduction: The Fraction Detective

Hook: Imagine that you have one pizza, one chocolate bar, or one hour of free time. How could you share or divide that one whole fairly?

Ask the learner:

  • What does it mean to divide something fairly?
  • Would two large pieces always be fair if one person received a much smaller piece?
  • Where have you seen fractions in everyday life?

Explain: “Today we will investigate how one whole can be divided into equal parts. We will use fractions to describe those parts and solve real-life problems.”

Body

Part 1: I Do—Modeling Fractions

Fold a piece of paper in half. Open it and point out the two equal parts.

Say:

“The entire paper is one whole. When I divide it into two equal parts, each part is one-half, written as 1/2.”

Write 1/2 and explain:

  • The denominator is the bottom number. It tells how many equal parts make the whole.
  • The numerator is the top number. It tells how many parts we are describing or using.

Fold another paper into four equal parts. Shade one part and label it 1/4. Shade three parts on another drawing and label it 3/4.

Emphasize that the parts must be equal. If one part is larger than another, the drawing does not accurately show fourths.

Ask the learner:

  1. In the fraction 3/5, what does the 5 tell us?
  2. What does the 3 tell us?
  3. How many equal parts are in one whole if the denominator is 8?

Part 2: We Do—Build and Compare Fractions

Use paper strips, LEGO bricks, crackers, or drawn shapes to make fraction models.

  1. Create one whole strip.
  2. Divide a second strip into two equal parts.
  3. Divide a third strip into four equal parts.
  4. Shade or mark different numbers of parts.
  5. Write the matching fraction beneath each model.

Work together to compare pairs of fractions with the same denominator:

  • 2/6 and 5/6
  • 3/8 and 1/8
  • 7/10 and 4/10

Guide the learner to notice that when the denominators are the same, the fraction with the greater numerator represents more parts.

Think-Pair-Share or Explain-Aloud

Have the learner think quietly, explain to a parent or partner, and then answer:

Which is greater: 3/5 or 1/5? How do you know?

Encourage a complete response such as: “3/5 is greater than 1/5 because both fractions have fifths, and three fifths are more than one fifth.”

Part 3: You Do—Fraction Hunt

Search the home, a book, a recipe, or a grocery label for fractions. Look for examples involving:

  • Cooking measurements, such as 1/2 cup
  • Time, such as 1/4 of an hour
  • Money, such as 1/2 of a dollar
  • Measurements, such as 3/4 inch
  • Sports or games, such as winning 3/5 of the rounds

Record at least three fractions and describe what each one represents.

Part 4: Real-World Fraction Challenge

Choose one project:

Option A: Design a Fraction Pizza

  1. Draw a circular pizza.
  2. Divide it into 8 equal slices.
  3. Add at least three toppings.
  4. Label how much of the pizza has each topping.
  5. Write two comparison sentences, such as “Pepperoni covers more pizza than mushrooms.”

Option B: Create a Fraction Garden

  1. Draw a rectangular garden.
  2. Divide it into 4, 6, 8, or 10 equal sections.
  3. Assign each section a plant or flower.
  4. Label each section with a fraction.
  5. Write a sentence describing the largest and smallest sections.

Option C: Invent a Fraction Game

  1. Create a game board divided into equal spaces.
  2. Use fraction cards or fraction questions.
  3. Write simple rules for moving or earning points.
  4. Test the game with another person.
  5. Revise one rule to make the game clearer or fairer.

Formative Assessment During Practice

Pause throughout the lesson and ask the learner to:

  • Draw 2/3.
  • Point to the numerator and denominator in 4/7.
  • Explain why equal-sized parts are important.
  • Compare 2/9 and 6/9.
