Materials Needed

Introduction: The Number Detective Challenge
Hook: Say, “A friendly number detective needs your help! Two treasure chests contain objects, but we need to find out which chest has more treasure. Can you investigate?”
- Place 4 objects in one bowl and 7 objects in another.
- Ask the learner to predict which bowl has more before counting.
- Have the learner count each group carefully.
- Ask:
- “Which bowl has more?”
- “Which bowl has fewer?”
- “How could we prove it?”
Share the plan: “Today we will practice counting, comparing groups, and finding different ways to make 10. At the end, you will complete a number detective challenge.”

I Do: Model Counting and Comparing
- Place 6 objects in a row.
- Touch each object as you count: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.” Explain that the last number tells how many objects are in the group.
- Write the numeral 6 beside the objects.
- Make a second group with 4 objects.
- Place the groups side by side and match the objects in pairs.
- Think aloud: “The group of 6 has two objects left over, so 6 is more than 4. The group of 4 has fewer objects.”
Quick Check: Show groups of 3 and 3. Ask, “Which group has more?” Guide the learner to answer, “Neither. They are equal because they have the same number.”
We Do: Number Detective Sort
Work together to solve each investigation.
- Choose two number cards from 0 to 10.
- Build each number using objects.
- Place the two groups side by side.
- Compare the groups using more, fewer, or equal.
- Record a sentence, such as:
- “8 is more than 5.”
- “2 is fewer than 7.”
- “6 is equal to 6.”
Think-Pair-Share Option: If another learner is available, each person draws a number card and builds that group. If working one-to-one, the adult or learner can take the second role. Both partners explain how they know which group is greater.

- Place 10 objects in a row or on a ten-frame.
- Separate the objects into two groups, such as 3 and 7.
- Say together: “3 and 7 make 10.”
