  • Small collection of objects, such as coins, buttons, blocks, or snacks

Big idea: The number 1 may be small, but it plays an important role in counting, multiplication, fractions, measurement, patterns, and everyday life.

Learning Objectives

  • Use the identity rule for multiplication: any number multiplied by 1 stays the same.
  • Represent 1 as a whole, a fraction, a decimal, and a percentage.

Introduction: The Mystery of One

Hook: Ask the learner: “Could one person, one idea, or one small action make a difference?”

Invite the learner to name examples, such as:

  • One seed growing into a plant
  • One vote helping decide an election
  • One kind action making someone’s day better
  • One spark lighting a candle
  • One important idea starting a story or invention

Explain: “Today we will investigate the number 1. We will discover how it works in math and why one can be powerful in the real world.”

Part 1: I Do — What Makes One Special?

Use objects from the materials list to demonstrate the following ideas.

1. One Means a Single Unit

Place one object on the table. Explain that “one” means a single item or unit.

Show that one can describe different things:

  • One apple
  • One minute
  • One meter
  • One dollar
  • One complete pizza

2. One Whole Can Be Written in Different Ways

Write the following on paper:

1 = 1/1 = 1.0 = 100%

Explain each form:

  • 1: a whole number
  • 1/1: one part out of one equal part, which is the complete whole
  • 1.0: a decimal equal to one
  • 100%: the entire amount

Example: If the learner drinks 100% of a glass of water, the learner drinks one whole glass.

3. Multiplying by One

Write these equations:

  • 5 × 1 = 5
  • 12 × 1 = 12
  • 1 × 36 = 36

Explain that multiplying by 1 keeps a number exactly the same. This is called the multiplicative identity property. The word “identity” means that the number keeps its identity or remains unchanged.

Teacher example: “If I have 4 groups of 1 block, I have 4 blocks. If I have 1 group of 4 blocks, I still have 4 blocks.”

Activity A: One in Many Forms

Work together to complete the chart.

Quick check: Ask the learner to explain the rule in their own words. A strong response should state that multiplying a number by 1 leaves the number unchanged.

Ask: “Which is more powerful: one large action or many tiny actions? Why?”

  • In a classroom, the learner may discuss with a partner.

Choose one of the following projects.

Choose one object and create a display showing at least five facts about it.

Include:

  • Its name
  • Its length, weight, price, or another measurement
  • One fraction connected to it
  • One multiplication equation using 1
  • A drawing or labeled diagram

Option 2: One Small Action Plan

Design one helpful action that could improve your home, neighborhood, or school.

Examples include:

  • Picking up one piece of litter each day
  • Reading one page to a younger child
  • Giving one sincere compliment
  • Saving one cup of water by turning off the tap

Create a mini-poster that includes:

  • The action
  • Why it matters
  • How often it will be done
  • A prediction about what might happen after one week

Option 3: One-Minute Number Challenge

Set a timer for one minute. Choose one activity:

  • Write as many multiplication facts involving 1 as possible.
  • Draw as many examples of one whole as possible.
  • List things measured in units of one.
