Materials Needed

Imagine this: You find a mysterious note that says, “One small digit can change everything.” Is that true?

Look at these numbers:

1, 10, 100, 1,000

Ask the learner:

  • What is the same about all four numbers?
  • What changes from one number to the next?
  • Which number would you rather have if you were counting dollars?

Explain that today the learner will investigate how the digit 1 works in different places and why place value is important in money, measurement, science, and everyday life.

Write the number 1,111. Explain that each 1 has a different value because of its position:

Say aloud:

1,111 = 1,000 + 100 + 10 + 1

Use blocks, coins, or drawings to represent each value. For example:

  • 1 group of 1,000
  • 1 group of 100

Directions

  1. Write the digits 0 through 9 on separate index cards.
  2. Choose four cards to make a four-digit number.
  3. Try to include the digit 1.
  4. Read the number aloud.
  5. State the value of the digit 1.
  6. Write the number in expanded form.

Example:

Number: 4,172

Value of 1: 100

Expanded form: 4,000 + 100 + 70 + 2

Activity 3: We Do — Multiplying and Dividing by 1, 10, 100, and 1,000

Explain these patterns using place-value language:

  • Multiplying by 1 keeps a number the same.
  • Multiplying by 10 moves each digit one place to the left.
  • Multiplying by 100 moves each digit two places to the left.
  • Multiplying by 1,000 moves each digit three places to the left.

Model:

24 × 10 = 240

24 × 100 = 2,400

24 × 1,000 = 24,000

Then model division:

2,400 ÷ 10 = 240

2,400 ÷ 100 = 24

Use place-value cards, drawings, or blocks rather than relying only on the phrase “add or remove zeros.” Emphasize that the digits change place value.

The learner creates a pretend store, science supply shop, bakery, or travel company. Every item must be connected to the number 1, 10, 100, or 1,000.

Directions

  1. Choose a type of store or business.
  2. Create a list of at least five items.
  3. Give each item a quantity, price, distance, weight, or measurement.
  4. Write at least four math questions about the items.
  5. Solve the questions and show your work.

Example

Space Supply Shop

  • 1 astronaut helmet costs $100.
  • 10 oxygen packs cost $1,000.
  • 1 rocket travels 1,000 kilometers.

Possible questions:

  • How much do 3 astronaut helmets cost?
  • How many $100 helmets can be bought with $1,000?
  • How far would 4 rockets travel if each travels 1,000 kilometers?
