Hook: Write these numbers on paper: 1, 10, 100, 1,000.
Ask:

Draw or write this place-value chart:

Explain:
- In 1, the digit 1 has a value of one.
- In 10, the digit 1 has a value of ten.
- In 100, the digit 1 has a value of one hundred.
- In 1,000, the digit 1 has a value of one thousand.
Demonstrate that each move to the left multiplies the value by 10:
1 × 10 = 10; 10 × 10 = 100; 100 × 10 = 1,000.
2. Demonstrate Expanded Form
Model the number 6,214:
6,000 + 200 + 10 + 4 = 6,214
Point out that a zero still has an important job. For example:
5,006 = 5,000 + 0 + 0 + 6
