Grade 1 Science Adventure: How Do Plants Grow?
Materials Needed
- One bean seed, such as a lima bean
- Clear plastic cup or small jar
- Paper towel or cotton balls

Introduction: The Mystery Seed
Hook: Show the student the bean seed and ask, “How can this tiny seed become a tall plant?”
Invite the student to hold or examine the seed. Ask:
- What do you notice about the seed?
- What do you think is inside it?
- What might happen if we give it water?
- Do you think it needs sunlight right away? Why?
Tell the student: “Today we will learn how a seed changes into a plant. We will also start our own plant-growing experiment so we can watch the changes happen.”

Part 1: I Do — Learn About the Plant Life Cycle
Explain that a life cycle is the series of changes a living thing goes through as it grows.
Use simple gestures or drawings to demonstrate these four stages:
- Seed: A small package containing a baby plant.
- Sprout: A tiny root and stem begin to come out of the seed.
- Seedling: The young plant grows leaves.
- Adult plant: The plant grows bigger and may make flowers, fruit, or new seeds.
Draw the stages in a circle on paper. Add arrows to show that the cycle can begin again when the adult plant makes new seeds.
Quick Check: Ask, “Which comes first: a seedling or a seed?” Then ask, “What comes after a sprout?”
Part 2: We Do — What Does a Plant Need?
Place or draw pictures of water, sunlight, air, soil, a toy, and a cookie. Ask the student to sort them into two groups:
- Plants need this.
- Plants do not need this to grow.
Discuss the results:
- Water helps the plant move nutrients and stay healthy.
- Light gives many plants energy to make food.
- Air provides gases plants need.
- Soil or another growing material can hold the plant in place and provide nutrients.
Think-Pair-Share: The student thinks of a plant they have seen. If working with another person, the student shares the plant with a partner. If working independently, the student tells a family member or records an audio response.
Complete this sentence together: “A plant needs _____ because _____.”
Part 3: We Do — Set Up the Seed Experiment
Model each step, then have the student complete it.
- Fold a paper towel or place cotton balls inside a clear cup.
- Add a small amount of water. The material should be damp, not dripping.
- Place the bean between the cup and the paper towel so it can be seen.
- Put the cup in a safe location with indirect sunlight.
- Label the cup with the student’s name and the date.
- Draw the seed in the science journal and write or dictate one prediction.
Prediction prompt: “I predict that the seed will _____ in _____ days.”
Safety reminder: Do not eat the seed or any part of the experiment. Wash hands after handling it.
Part 4: You Do — Observe Like a Scientist
For the next 7–10 days, the student checks the seed once each day.
