Number 10 Lesson Plan: Counting, Patterns & Safe Computer Thinking

A fun preschool and kindergarten lesson on recognizing the number 10, counting objects, creating patterns, sorting yes-or-no choices, and learning safe computer habits through hands-on play.

Number 10 and the Silly Computer Mystery

Materials Needed

  • 10 small toys, blocks, or buttons
  • Paper and crayons
  • Number cards from 1 to 10, or handwritten numbers
  • Two paper plates or bowls labeled “YES” and “NO”
  • Optional: a toy keyboard or tablet with the screen turned off
  • Optional: music for a counting song

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, the child will be able to:

  • Count 10 objects with one-to-one counting.
  • Recognize and name the number 10.
  • Sort simple “yes” and “no” choices.
  • Explain that computer words and symbols are instructions that should be used safely with a grown-up.
  • Create a simple pattern using objects, colors, or movements.

Success Criteria

The child is successful when they can:

  • Touch and count 10 objects without skipping or counting one object twice.
  • Point to the number 10.
  • Put at least four simple choices in the correct “YES” or “NO” group.
  • Make and describe a simple repeating pattern.

Introduction: The Mystery String 5 minutes

Hook: Show the child a paper with a pretend computer string made of large, friendly symbols:

10   YES   NO   10

Say:

“A computer can see numbers and symbols. Today we are going to be number detectives! We will find 10, play a yes-or-no game, and make our own safe computer pattern.”

Ask:

  • “What number do you see?”
  • “Can you show me 10 fingers?”
  • “What things do computers need from people?”

Explain in simple language:

“Some computer strings look strange. They are instructions for computers. We do not type strange instructions into a computer without asking a grown-up. Today we will use pretend symbols and safe play.”

Body: I Do, We Do, You Do

1. I Do: Count to 10 5 minutes

Place 10 toys in a row. Touch each toy while counting slowly:

“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10!”

Point to the last toy and say:

“The last number tells us how many toys there are. There are 10 toys.”

Show the number card 10. Explain:

“The number 10 means a group of ten. It has a 1 and a 0.”

2. We Do: Build a Group of 10 7 minutes

Work together to make groups of 10 using blocks, buttons, or toys.

  1. Put one object down.
  2. Count aloud together.
  3. Keep adding objects until you reach 10.
  4. Touch each object once as you count.
  5. Place the number card 10 beside the group.

Quick check: Move one object away and ask, “Are there still 10?” Count together. Add it back and ask, “Now how many?”

Movement option: Clap 10 times, jump 10 times, or tap the table 10 times. Let the child choose the movement.

3. We Do: The Safe Yes-or-No Game 7 minutes

Place two bowls or plates in front of the child: one labeled YES and one labeled NO.

Read each statement. The child places a toy, card, or token in the correct bowl.

  • “Do we have 10 toys?”
  • “Is a cat a kind of animal?”
  • “Can a fish fly like a bird?”
  • “Is it safe to ask a grown-up before using a computer?”
  • “Is the number 10 smaller than the number 2?”

After each answer, ask:

“How do you know?”

Reinforce:

“Yes and no are choices. We can stop, think, and check before we choose.”

4. I Do: Make a Pattern 4 minutes

Make a simple pattern with two objects:

Red, blue, red, blue

Say:

“A pattern repeats. Red, blue, red, blue. What comes next?”

Make a second pattern using movements:

Clap, tap, clap, tap

Explain:

“Computers can follow patterns too. People create the instructions, and computers follow them.”

5. You Do: Be the Computer 8 minutes

Let the child choose one activity:

  • Counting computer: Count 10 objects and point to the number 10.
  • Pattern computer: Copy and continue a pattern made with toys, colors, sounds, or movements.
  • Yes-or-no computer: Listen to five statements and place each one in the correct bowl.

Give instructions one step at a time. For example:

  1. “Pick up one block.”
  2. “Put it in the row.”
  3. “Count the blocks.”
  4. “Tell me if you have 10.”

Offer specific feedback:

  • “You touched each block once. That helped you count carefully.”
  • “You noticed the pattern repeated.”
  • “You stopped and checked before choosing. That is safe computer thinking.”

Creative Challenge: Make a Mystery Card 5 minutes

Invite the child to create a safe pretend computer card.

The child may draw:

  • 10 dots, stars, or shapes
  • A repeating pattern
  • A big number 10
  • A YES or NO choice

Ask the child to explain the card:

  • “What does your card say?”
  • “Where is the number 10?”
  • “What pattern did you make?”
  • “What would you ask a grown-up before using a real computer?”

Formative Assessment

Check understanding during the lesson by asking the child to:

  • Show 10 fingers.
  • Count 10 objects.
  • Find the number 10 among several number cards.
  • Continue a two-part pattern.
  • Sort simple statements into YES and NO.

Summative Assessment: Number Detective Mission

Give the child this short mission:

  1. “Build a group of 10.”
  2. “Find the number 10.”
  3. “Make a pattern with your objects.”
  4. “Tell me what comes next in your pattern.”
  5. “Tell me one safe computer rule.”

Expected safe computer rule: “Ask a grown-up before using or typing something on a computer.”

Differentiation

For a Child Who Needs More Support

  • Use five objects first, then add five more to make 10.
  • Provide hand-over-hand or pointing support while counting.
  • Use only two number cards: 9 and 10.
  • Use a simple AB pattern, such as red-blue-red-blue.
  • Give two choices instead of open-ended questions.

For a Child Ready for More Challenge

  • Ask the child to find two groups that make 10, such as 6 and 4.
  • Invite the child to create an ABC pattern.
  • Ask the child to give instructions for another person to follow.
  • Have the child compare 10 with another number: “Which is more, 10 or 7?”
  • Invite the child to invent a safe pretend computer command using only pictures, numbers, and friendly words.

Conclusion and Recap 3 minutes

Gather the materials and ask the child to complete these sentences:

  • “Today I counted to ____.”
  • “The number 10 has a ____ and a ____.”
  • “A pattern is something that ____.”
  • “Before using a computer, I should ask a ____.”

Finish with a cheerful chant:

“Count, check, choose, and play—safe computer thinking every day!”

Optional Follow-Up Activities

  • Look for groups of 10 during the day: toes, crayons, steps, or snacks.
  • Make a snack pattern, such as cracker-fruit-cracker-fruit.
  • Draw 10 favorite things.
  • Play “Simon Says” using simple step-by-step instructions.
  • Take a picture of the child’s number card or pattern for a learning portfolio, with caregiver permission.
