Introduction: The Number Detective Mission
Hook: Show the child the number cards or write:

Say:
“Look at these amazing numbers! They are much too big for us to count one by one today. We will be number detectives and explore how numbers work.”
Ask:
- “Do you see any numbers you know?”
- “Which number looks longer?”
- “Can you find a 1? Can you find a 6?”
Tell the child:
“Today we will look for numbers, make small groups, compare them, and create our own number adventure.”

Part 1: I Do — Looking Closely at Numbers
Point to each large number and read it simply:
- “This number is 198,766.”
- “This number is 667,891.”
Explain:
“These numbers have many digits. A digit is one number symbol, like 1, 6, or 9. When digits stand together, they can make a very big number.”
Model finding digits:
- Circle a 1.
- Tap each digit in 198,766.
- Say, “I see a 1, a 9, an 8, and some 6s.”
- Make a small group of six blocks and say, “This group has six.”
Quick check: Ask, “Can you point to a 6?” Accept pointing, naming, or matching the digit card.
Part 2: We Do — Make and Compare Groups
Place two small groups of objects in front of the child. For example, make one group with 3 blocks and another with 7 blocks.
Guide the child through these steps:
- Touch and count the objects in the first group.
- Touch and count the objects in the second group.
- Ask, “Which group has more?”
- Ask, “Which group has fewer?”
- Put the groups together and count how many there are altogether.
Say:
“Our big numbers are made from many groups, just like our blocks are made into groups. We can explore a big number by looking at small parts.”
Repeat with different groups. Let the child choose the number of objects for one group.
Think-pair-share option: If another person is available, the child tells that person which group has more. For homeschool learning, the child may explain the answer to a stuffed animal.
Part 3: We Do — Number Hunt
Place number cards from 0 to 9 around the room or on a table.
Give one instruction at a time:
- “Find the number 1.”
- “Find the number 6.”
- “Put the 1 and 6 next to each other.”
- “Can you find another 6?”
Invite the child to create a pretend number. It does not need to be a real large number. For example, the child may make 166 or 619.
Ask:
- “What number did you make?”
- “Which digit is first?”
- “Which digit is last?”
Part 4: You Do — Build a Number Adventure
Invite the child to choose one of the following activities.
Choice A: Block Number Tower
- Build a tower with 5 to 10 blocks.
- Build a second tower with a different number of blocks.
- Compare the towers.
- Say which tower is taller or shorter.
Choice B: Number Creature
- Draw a friendly number creature.
- Give it a number name, such as “Six-Six” or “Number 9.”
- Add that many dots, eyes, spots, or stickers if practical.
- Tell a short story about the creature.
Choice C: Number Picnic
- Place 3 toy foods in one bowl and 5 in another.
- Ask which bowl has more.
- Add or remove objects until the bowls have the same number.
- Say, “Now they are the same.”
As the child works, give specific feedback:
- “You touched each block as you counted. That helped you keep track.”
- “You noticed that 7 is more than 3.”
- “You made your own number and explained it clearly.”
Part 5: Optional Real-World Connection
Explain:
“People use numbers to count toys, money, steps, books, stars, and many other things. A very big number can tell us that there are lots and lots of something.”
Choose a familiar example:
- “How many books are on our shelf?”
- “How many socks are in the laundry?”
- “How many steps can we take to the door?”
Count together, stopping at a comfortable number.

For a Child Ready for More Challenge
- Use numbers to 20.
- Ask the child to order three groups from least to greatest.
- Invite the child to create a two- or three-digit number.
- Explore simple addition stories, such as “You have 3 apples and get 2 more. How many now?”
