Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will understand the basic concepts of chemistry related to candies.
Materials and Prep
- A variety of candies (different colors and shapes)
- A small bowl of warm water
- A small bowl of cold water
- A plate or tray
- A magnifying glass (optional)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Sort the candies by color and shape. Discuss the different colors and shapes you see.
- Place a candy on the plate or tray and observe it closely. Use the magnifying glass to see the details if you have one.
- Take one candy and place it in the warm water. Observe what happens to the candy. Does it change in any way?
- Take another candy and place it in the cold water. Observe what happens to the candy. Does it change in any way?
- Compare the candies that were placed in warm and cold water. Discuss any differences you notice.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Candies come in different colors and shapes. Can you name some colors and shapes you see?"
- "When we look closely at a candy, we can see its details. Can you describe what you see?"
- "When we put a candy in warm water, it might start to change. Can you think of any changes you noticed?"
- "When we put a candy in cold water, it might also change. Can you describe any changes you observed?"
- "By comparing the candies in warm and cold water, we can see if they changed differently. What differences did you notice?"
