Introduction: The Soil Detective Challenge
Hook: A Future News Report
Imagine it is the year 2045. A news report says:
“Farmers are struggling to grow food because much of the region’s soil has washed away. Rivers are muddy, wildlife habitats have disappeared, and some communities do not have enough clean water.”
Ask Heidi:
- What might have caused this problem?
- How could damaged land affect people who do not live near the damaged area?
- What could people have done earlier to prevent it?
Explain that today she will act as a soil detective. She will investigate how human actions change land, collect evidence, and design a plan to protect it.

- The movement of topsoil by wind or water. Topsoil is the nutrient-rich upper layer where many plants grow.

Part 1: I Do — How Human Actions Change Land
Explain that healthy land usually contains several connected parts:
- Plants that hold soil in place with their roots
- Organisms such as worms, fungi, and bacteria that recycle nutrients

- Water that can soak into the ground instead of rapidly running off
- Habitats that support insects, birds, mammals, and other organisms

Part 2: We Do — Soil Erosion Investigation
Explain that this investigation models how vegetation affects soil erosion. It is a model, not a perfect copy of every real ecosystem.
Set Up Three Test Areas
- Place three equal amounts of soil into three cups or shallow containers.
- Label them:
- Area A: Covered land — place leaves, grass, or twigs on top.
- Area B: Bare land — leave the soil uncovered.
- Area C: Protected land — cover the soil with a thin layer of small sticks, leaves, or another material that represents mulch.
- Place each container on a tray. Tilt the containers slightly if possible.
- Pour the same amount of water over each area from the same height.
- Observe the water that runs off. Compare its color, amount, and the soil it carries.

Discuss the Evidence

Expected idea: Plant material and ground cover slow water down, help soil absorb water, and reduce erosion. Bare soil is generally more vulnerable to being carried away.
Part 3: You Do — Land Degradation Case File
Heidi chooses one of the following case files, or creates a local example:
- Cleared hillside: Trees are removed to build houses. Heavy rain causes mudslides and muddy streams.
- Overgrazed pasture: Too many animals feed in one area. Grass disappears, and wind blows away the topsoil.
- Exhausted farmland: The same crop is planted repeatedly, and the soil loses nutrients.
- Expanding city: Natural land is covered with roads and buildings, causing more runoff and flooding.
- Open-pit mine: Vegetation and topsoil are removed. Nearby water becomes polluted by sediment.
Complete the following case file:
- Human activity: What are people doing?
- Immediate environmental change: What changes first?
- Short-term effects: What happens within months or a few years?
- Long-term effects: What could happen if the problem continues?
- Who is affected? Consider people, plants, animals, businesses, and future generations.
- Evidence: What observation from the soil investigation supports your explanation?
Part 4: You Do — Design a Land-Saving Solution
Heidi becomes an environmental planner. She designs a solution for her selected case file. Her plan may be a poster, one-page proposal, short presentation, comic strip, model, or digital slide.
Her plan must include:
- A title and a clear description of the land problem
- The human activity causing or worsening the problem
- At least two realistic solutions
- An explanation of how each solution protects soil, water, plants, animals, or people
- One possible challenge, such as cost, time, land access, or community disagreement
- A way to measure whether the plan is working
Possible solutions include:
- Planting trees or native grasses
- Using terraces or contour planting on slopes
- Rotating crops and planting cover crops
- Reducing tilling of soil
- Moving grazing animals between different areas
- Using mulch to cover bare ground
- Restoring wetlands or natural drainage areas
- Creating permeable surfaces that allow rainwater to soak into the ground
- Replanting vegetation after mining or construction
