Key Vocabulary

Climate
The usual pattern of weather in a place over a long period.
Climate change
Long-term changes in temperature, rainfall, wind patterns, and other climate conditions.
Greenhouse gas
A gas that traps heat in Earth’s atmosphere. Carbon dioxide and methane are examples.
Cause
Something that helps create an event or change.
Consequence
A result or effect of an event or change.
Mitigation
Actions that reduce the causes of climate change, such as using less fossil fuel.
Adaptation
Actions that help people and ecosystems cope with effects that are already happening or expected.

Introduction: The Climate Detective Challenge

Hook: Ask Heidi:

Imagine that your town, your country, and the entire planet are all characters in the same story. How might the same environmental change affect each character differently?

Show or describe three possible clues:

  • A local park has fewer healthy trees after several very hot, dry summers.
  • A country experiences more damaging floods and heat waves.
  • Glaciers are shrinking and sea levels are rising around the world.

Ask Heidi to think silently for one minute, then answer:

  • What might connect these three clues?
  • Which clue would affect people most directly where you live?
  • Why might an environmental problem look different in different places?

Explain the lesson goal:

“Today you will investigate climate change like a detective. You will identify its causes, trace its consequences from the local level to the global level, and create an evidence-based explanation of what can be done.”

Body Part 1: What Causes Climate Change?

I Do: Teacher or Parent Modeling

Explain that Earth’s atmosphere naturally traps some heat, making life possible. Human activities have increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, causing additional warming.

Model a simple cause-and-effect chain:

Burning coal, oil, and gasmore carbon dioxide in the atmospheremore heat trappedrising average temperatureschanges in weather, oceans, and ecosystems

Introduce several major causes:

  • Burning fossil fuels for electricity, transportation, heating, and industry
  • Cutting down forests, which reduces the number of trees absorbing carbon dioxide

  • Industrial production and waste

Clarify that natural factors can influence climate, including volcanic eruptions and changes in solar energy. However, current rapid warming is primarily linked to human activities.

Write or display the following statements. Heidi should place each one under Cause, Consequence, or Response. Discuss any statement that could fit more than one category depending on how it is explained.

  • More cars burn gasoline.
  • Sea levels rise as oceans warm and ice melts.

Heidi chooses one cause from the list below and creates a five-step chain:

I Do: Explain the Three Scales

Explain that the word scale means the size or level at which a problem is studied.

Scale Meaning Possible climate-change consequence
Local A neighborhood, town, city, or nearby ecosystem More extreme heat, drought, flooding, wildfire risk, or stressed local wildlife
National A whole country Damage to agriculture, water supplies, infrastructure, public health, or the economy
Global The entire planet or many countries Rising sea levels, melting ice, ocean warming, biodiversity loss, and climate migration

Emphasize that consequences can be connected. For example, a global temperature increase can contribute to a national heat wave, which can affect a local school, farm, park, or family.

We Do: The Three-Scale Investigation

Help Heidi create a chart with three columns:

Local National Global
What might happen near us? What might happen across our country? What might happen around the world?

Invite Heidi to select one local topic:

  • Heat waves
  • Flooding
  • Drought
  • Wildfires
  • Coastal erosion or sea-level rise
  • Changes in local plants, animals, or growing seasons

For each scale, Heidi records:

  1. The environmental consequence
  2. Who or what is affected
  3. One piece of supporting evidence or a source to investigate

Think-pair-share alternative: If another learner is available, each person explains one consequence and the listener asks, “What evidence supports that?” For homeschool study, Heidi can explain her ideas aloud to a parent, record a voice memo, or write a short response.

You Do: Climate Impact Map

Heidi chooses one of the following formats:

  • A hand-drawn map with labels
  • A digital map or slide presentation
  • A three-panel comic
  • An infographic
  • A short narrated video

Her product must show:

  1. One cause of climate change
  2. One local consequence
  3. One national consequence
  4. One global consequence
  5. At least two arrows showing how the effects are connected

Local consequence: More frequent hot days can increase heat stress in a nearby town.

Adaptation: Plant shade trees, improve cooling centers, or redesign drainage systems.

Evidence Hunt: Checking Reliable Information

Explain that strong environmental claims should be supported by evidence. Heidi investigates at least two sources and records:

Source What does it claim? What evidence does it provide? Why does it seem reliable?

Encourage her to use government science agencies, universities, museums, or international scientific organizations. Remind her to check the author, date, evidence, and whether other reliable sources agree.

Application Activity: Design a Climate Action Plan

Heidi imagines that she is advising a local council, school, workplace, or family. She chooses one challenge and designs a three-part response.

  1. Problem: State the climate-related challenge.
  2. Mitigation: Suggest one action that reduces greenhouse-gas emissions.
  3. Adaptation: Suggest one action that helps people prepare for the consequence.
  4. Fairness check: Explain who might benefit, who might face difficulties, and how the plan could be made fairer.
