AR & NSO Math Benchmark Review Lesson Plan for Homeschool Students

Math Mission: AR and NSO Benchmark Review

Materials Needed

  • Student’s flagged AR (Algebraic Reasoning) and NSO (Number Sense and Operations) benchmarks or skill list
  • Notebook or loose-leaf paper
  • Pencils, eraser, and colored pens or highlighters
  • Calculator, if permitted by the selected benchmarks
  • Index cards or small pieces of paper
  • Timer
  • Optional: graph paper, dice, playing cards, and a digital quiz or spreadsheet
  • Teacher-created or printed practice problems aligned to the student’s specific AR and NSO needs

Lesson Overview

Audience: One 16-year-old homeschool student

Length: Two 45-minute sessions

Focus: Reviewing identified needs in Algebraic Reasoning and Number Sense and Operations

Approach: I Do, We Do, You Do

Learning Objectives

By the end of the two lessons, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify whether a problem primarily involves an AR skill or an NSO skill.
  2. Use accurate strategies to solve problems connected to the student’s identified benchmark needs.
  3. Explain the reasoning behind at least three solutions using words, equations, diagrams, or another appropriate representation.
  4. Check answers for reasonableness by estimating, using inverse operations, substituting values, or reviewing units.
  5. Apply reviewed skills to a realistic challenge involving money, data, planning, or decision-making.

Success Criteria

The student is successful when they can:

  • Correctly solve at least 80% of the independent review problems.
  • Choose and explain an appropriate strategy instead of guessing or relying only on memorized steps.
  • Show work clearly enough for another person to follow.
  • Use at least one method to check each final answer.
  • Correct mistakes after receiving feedback and explain what changed.

Preparation Before Day 1

  1. Review the student’s AR and NSO benchmark results.
  2. Select two or three priority skills from each area. Examples may include:
    • NSO: operations with rational numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, exponents, or estimation.
    • AR: simplifying expressions, solving equations or inequalities, interpreting functions, analyzing patterns, or translating real situations into algebra.
  3. Create or gather four short problems for each priority skill: one modeled example, one guided example, and two independent examples.
  4. Do not provide answers immediately. Use mistakes as opportunities to discuss strategy and reasoning.

Day 1: Skill Detective Review

Time: 45 minutes

1. Introduction: Mission Briefing and Hook — 5 minutes

Begin with this scenario:

You are checking the math for a small business. One mistake with a percentage, equation, or decimal could change the final cost. Your job is to find the mistake, solve the problem, and prove that your answer makes sense.

Explain:

“Today we will review the skills that need the most attention in AR and NSO. You will act as a math detective. We will identify the skill, choose a strategy, solve the problem, and check the answer.”

Show the student the selected benchmark skills and ask:

  • “Which skill feels most familiar?”
  • “Which skill feels least comfortable?”
  • “What usually causes mistakes: reading the problem, choosing a strategy, calculating, or checking?”

2. Quick Diagnostic Sort — 5 minutes

Prepare six short problems based on the student’s priority benchmarks. Mix AR and NSO problems together.

For each problem, the student should:

  1. Label it AR, NSO, or both.
  2. Circle the important information.
  3. Write one possible first step.

Formative check: Ask the student to explain how they recognized the skill. Correct classification is more important than completing every calculation at this stage.

3. I Do: Teacher Modeling — 10 minutes

Select one AR problem and one NSO problem that match the student’s needs. Model the following routine aloud:

  1. Understand: What is the problem asking?
  2. Plan: What operation, representation, formula, or strategy fits?
  3. Solve: Complete the work one step at a time.
  4. Check: Does the answer make sense?
  5. Explain: State what the answer means.

Use a think-aloud such as:

“I notice that the problem compares two quantities, so I need to identify the relationship before calculating. I will write an equation rather than immediately using numbers. After solving, I will substitute my answer back into the original equation to check it.”

Model at least one mistake intentionally. For example, make an arithmetic error, notice that the result is unreasonable, and correct it. Emphasize that checking is part of solving, not an optional extra step.

4. We Do: Strategy Stations — 15 minutes

Create two stations or two sections on a table:

  • NSO Station: numbers, operations, percentages, ratios, fractions, decimals, or estimation
  • AR Station: expressions, equations, patterns, functions, inequalities, or algebraic modeling

Work through one problem from each station together.

For each problem, take turns:

  • The teacher reads the problem and asks, “What do we know?”
  • The student identifies the skill and suggests a strategy.
  • The teacher asks guiding questions instead of giving the next step immediately.
  • The student completes the calculation.
  • Both discuss how to check the answer.

Use questions such as:

  • “What does this number represent?”
  • “Could you solve this another way?”
  • “What would happen if the value were larger?”
  • “How can we tell whether the answer is reasonable?”
  • “Where might someone make a common mistake?”

5. You Do: Math Detective Challenge — 7 minutes

Give the student two new problems: one AR problem and one NSO problem.

The student works independently and records:

  • The skill being tested
  • The strategy selected
  • All important steps
  • A method for checking the answer
  • A one-sentence explanation of the result

Afterward, review the work together. Ask the student to use a different color to mark:

  • What was correct
  • Where a mistake occurred, if applicable
  • What change would improve the solution

6. Closure and Exit Ticket — 3 minutes

Ask the student to complete the following:

  1. “One AR skill I can do more confidently is…”
  2. “One NSO skill I still need to practice is…”
  3. “The best way to check my answer is…”

Use the responses to select the focus for Day 2.

Day 2: Real-World Math Mission

Time: 45 minutes

1. Introduction and Retrieval Warm-Up — 5 minutes

Begin with a quick review game called Three Clues.

Give the student a problem without naming the skill. Provide three clues one at a time:

  1. “This problem involves a relationship between quantities.”
  2. “You may need to represent the relationship with a formula or equation.”
  3. “Your answer should be checked by substituting or comparing values.”

The student identifies the likely AR or NSO skill and explains the clues. Repeat with a second problem.

State the goal:

“Today you will use your reviewed skills in a realistic challenge. You will choose the strategy, explain your reasoning, and defend your answer.”

2. I Do: Model a Real-World Decision — 8 minutes

Model a short scenario using one of the student’s priority skills.

Sample scenario: A student has a $120 budget for a weekend event. A venue costs $45, supplies cost $18.50, and food costs $12 per person. Create an equation or inequality to determine how many people can attend.

Think aloud while modeling:

  1. Identify the fixed cost and the cost that changes.
  2. Represent the situation with an equation or inequality.
  3. Solve step by step.
  4. Interpret the answer in context.
  5. Check whether the answer should be rounded up, rounded down, or left exact.

Adjust the numbers or scenario to match the student’s actual AR and NSO benchmarks. For example, use discounts, tax, unit rates, proportions, graph interpretation, or a savings plan.

3. We Do: Build the Solution Together — 12 minutes

Choose one of the following collaborative scenarios:

  • Budget Challenge: Plan a meal, trip, or event while staying within a budget.
  • Phone Plan Challenge: Compare a fixed monthly fee and per-unit charges.
  • Sports Statistics Challenge: Analyze averages, percentages, ratios, or changes over time.
  • Saving Challenge: Determine how long it will take to reach a goal using a repeated deposit or percentage increase.
  • Design Challenge: Use equations, measurements, and operations to plan a room, garden, or small project.

Work through the scenario using a shared four-box organizer:

What do we know? What are we trying to find? What strategy or equation fits? How can we check?
Facts, numbers, units, and restrictions The unknown quantity or decision Operations, formula, table, graph, or equation Estimate, substitute, compare, or use inverse operations

Pause after each box and ask the student to justify the entry. If the student becomes stuck, offer two possible strategies and ask them to choose one.

4. You Do: Choose Your Math Mission — 15 minutes

Allow the student to choose one mission. Choice may increase motivation and encourage ownership.

  1. Write or select a realistic problem connected to an interest such as music, gaming, sports, cooking, fashion, technology, travel, or personal finance.
  2. Make sure the problem includes at least one AR skill and one NSO skill.
  3. Solve the problem independently.
  4. Represent the solution in at least two ways, such as:
    • equation and written explanation;
    • table and graph;
    • calculation and diagram;
    • estimate and exact solution.
  5. Check the answer and explain whether it is reasonable.

Suggested mission: Design a three-day activity plan with a fixed budget. Include transportation, food, and activity costs. Use at least one percentage, ratio, equation, or inequality. Present the final plan and prove that it fits the budget.

5. Feedback and Revision — 3 minutes

Use the following feedback routine:

  • Glow: Identify one strong mathematical choice.
  • Grow: Identify one step that could be clearer or more accurate.
  • Revise: The student makes one improvement and explains why it improves the work.

6. Summative Assessment and Closure — 2 minutes

Ask the student to complete a final verbal or written response:

“The most useful strategy I practiced was ____. I know my answer is reasonable because ____. One benchmark skill I will continue practicing is ____.”

Summative Assessment

Evaluate the Day 2 Math Mission using the following four-point rubric:

Category 4 - Strong 3 - Proficient 2 - Developing 1 - Beginning
Skill selection Correctly identifies and uses both AR and NSO skills. Uses the appropriate skills with minor guidance. Identifies one skill correctly or needs frequent guidance. Does not yet identify the relevant skills.
Accuracy Solution is accurate and complete. Solution is mostly accurate with a minor error. Several errors affect the result. Work is incomplete or mostly inaccurate.
Reasoning Clearly explains the strategy and meaning of the answer. Explains the main steps adequately. Explanation is incomplete or difficult to follow. Provides little or no explanation.
Checking Uses an effective check and interprets the result correctly. Attempts an appropriate check. Check is incomplete or not connected to the problem. Does not check the answer.

Differentiation and Adaptations

For a Student Who Needs Additional Support

  • Reduce the number of problems while keeping the same target skill.
  • Use color coding for known values, unknown values, operations, and units.
  • Provide a four-step problem-solving checklist.
  • Offer partially completed equations, tables, or diagrams.
  • Use smaller numbers first, then increase complexity.
  • Allow the student to explain answers orally before writing them.
  • Provide a calculator after the student demonstrates the setup and strategy.

For a Student Ready for Extension

  • Ask the student to solve the problem using two different methods.
  • Require a graph, table, equation, and written interpretation.
  • Have the student change one variable and analyze its effect.
  • Ask the student to create a similar problem for someone else to solve.
  • Include constraints, multiple solutions, or an error-analysis component.

Flexible Delivery Options

  • For independent homeschool work, the instructor can act as the discussion partner and evaluator.
  • For a classroom, use pairs or small groups for the We Do activities.
  • For digital instruction, use a shared document, virtual whiteboard, spreadsheet, or online quiz.
  • For a training-style setting, connect the scenarios to workplace budgeting, sales, scheduling, inventory, or data analysis.

Optional Follow-Up Practice

Have the student choose one benchmark skill and create a one-page “How to Solve It” guide containing:

  1. A description of the skill in their own words
  2. A worked example
  3. A common mistake
  4. A method for checking the answer
  5. One original practice problem and its solution
