The Human Development Index
Introduce the Human Development Index, or HDI. It combines three broad areas:
- Health: measured mainly through life expectancy.
- Education: measured through years of schooling and expected years of schooling.
- Standard of living: measured through income per person.
Explain that HDI is useful because it looks beyond income. It creates a score between 0 and 1, with higher scores generally indicating higher human development. It is still an average, so it may hide inequality within a country.
Think-aloud example: “If Country X has high income but low life expectancy and low education levels, I should not automatically call it highly developed. I need to examine all three parts of the HDI.”

- Find or use data for the selected places.
- Divide the data into three or four categories, such as low, medium, high, and very high.
- Color each place according to its category.
- Add a title, legend, labels, compass direction, and data source.
- Write a short explanation of the pattern shown on the map.
Option B: Wellbeing Scorecard
- Choose three places to compare.
- Select four indicators: one health measure, one education measure, one economic measure, and one access or equality measure.
- Rank each place from 1 to 3 for every indicator.
- Add the scores, while remembering that this is a simple classroom model rather than an official index.
- Explain which place has the strongest overall result and whether the total score hides any important detail.
Option C: “Design a Better Index” Challenge
- Imagine that you are designing an index for a city or country.
- Choose five indicators that you think best represent wellbeing.
- Give each indicator a weight, such as 10%, 20%, or 30%.
- Explain why you gave each measure its weight.
- Describe one group of people who might be overlooked by your index.

Explain that governments and organizations use wellbeing data to decide where to build schools, improve transport, provide healthcare, expand internet access, or invest in clean water. Maps can reveal spatial patterns, such as:
- Urban areas having more hospitals than rural areas.
- Coastal regions having different incomes from inland regions.
- Education levels changing between neighborhoods.
