“Imagine that you are growing lettuce for a salad. One day, you notice many other plants growing around it. Some may be weeds. What might happen if all the plants are crowded together?”

“Plants need room for their roots, leaves, and stems. They also need sunlight, water, nutrients from the soil, and air. When plants are too close, they may have to compete, which means they are trying to get the same limited resources.”

Activity

Show Keatyn a picture, tray, or real example of a crowded plant area. Ask:

  • What do you notice?
  • Which plants look healthy?
  • Where might the roots be growing?
  • What could happen if every plant tried to use the same space?

Have children act like plants. Give each child a small “space bubble.” Slowly move children closer together. Ask how it feels to have less room to stretch, stand, and “reach” for sunlight.

Activity Break 1: Plant Space Stretch

Time: 5–10 minutes

Children stand apart like growing plants. Call out “sunlight,” “water,” “roots,” or “air.” Children stretch toward the resource without bumping anyone. If space becomes crowded, they must explain what problem occurred.

Segment 2: What Plants Need

Time: 10–15 minutes

Purpose: Build background knowledge about plant needs.

  • Sunlight to help make food.
  • Water to move materials through the plant.

Purpose: Define weeds without teaching that every wild plant is bad.

“A weed is a plant growing where people do not want it to grow. A plant can be useful in one place and a weed in another place. For example, a dandelion might be welcome in a wildflower area but unwanted in a row of carrots.”

Ask: “Could the same plant be wanted in one place but considered a weed in another?” Children discuss with a partner, then share examples.

Remind children that “maybe” is a smart answer when they do not know a plant.

Segment 4: What Weeds Can Do

Purpose: Explain how weeds affect useful plants.

Use two cups of soil or two areas marked with string. Place several pretend “plants” in one small space. Explain that weeds may:

  • Use water that the food plant needs.
  • Use nutrients from the soil.
  • Block sunlight with their leaves.
  • Crowd roots and leaves.
  • Make it harder to find or harvest the food plant.
  • Sometimes shelter pests or spread quickly by seeds.

Complete this chart together:

Math Practice

A garden row has 8 lettuce plants and 5 weeds. How many plants are growing in the row altogether? How many are wanted if all 8 lettuce plants were planted on purpose?

Activity Break 4: Resource Relay

Time: 5–10 minutes

Place five objects in a basket to represent resources. Teams take turns collecting one object for a “garden plant.” Add pretend weeds. Discuss what happens when the resources run out before every plant gets one.

Segment 5: Identifying Plants We Grow

Time: 10–15 minutes

Purpose: Use clues to identify intentionally grown plants.

I Do: Model the Clues

Explain that identification is like being a plant detective. Look for:

  1. Where the plant is growing.
  2. Whether it is in a planned row, pot, or marked space.
  3. What was planted there.
  4. The shape, color, texture, and number of leaves.
  5. The plant’s size and growth pattern.
  6. A label, seed packet, garden map, or plant guide.

Say: “Location is a clue, but it is not proof. A weed can grow in a neat row, and a planted seed may appear in an unexpected place. When unsure, ask an adult or wait for more information.”

We Do: Compare

Compare two plant samples or cards. Ask children to describe each one without guessing its name first. Use words such as tall, short, smooth, fuzzy, round, pointed, light green, or dark green.

You Do: Plant Detective Notes

Keatyn records three observations about each sample and writes whether she thinks it is wanted, a weed, or unknown. She must give evidence for her answer.

Activity Break 5: Mystery Plant Detective

Time: 5–10 minutes

Put a plant card or safe sample in a bag or behind a folder. Children ask yes-or-no questions to identify it. Questions may include, “Does it have wide leaves?” or “Is it growing in our vegetable bed?”

Segment 6: Reading a Garden Guide

Time: 10–15 minutes

Purpose: Practice reading for details and using text evidence.

Reading Passage

Before pulling a plant, look carefully. A plant growing beside a labeled tomato may be a weed, but it could also be a young tomato plant that grew from a dropped seed. Notice the leaf shape, stem, and location. Ask an adult if you are unsure. It is safer to wait than to pull a plant you want to keep.

Writing Practice

Time: 5–10 minutes

Children search the reading passage for words that describe actions, such as “look,” “notice,” “ask,” and “wait.” They act out each word and use it in a new garden sentence.

Segment 7: Measuring Plant Space

Time: 10–15 minutes

Purpose: Apply math to spacing.

Show how to measure from the center of one plant to the center of another. Explain that seed packets often recommend spacing. The correct amount depends on the kind of plant.

Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure several plant spaces. Record the results in inches or centimeters.

Activity Break 7: Human Measuring Tape

Time: 5–10 minutes

Use string or floor markers to make spaces of 3, 6, 9, and 12 inches. Children stand at the markers and identify which space is closest to a chosen plant’s recommended spacing.

Segment 8: Why We Remove Weeds

Time: 10–15 minutes

Purpose: Connect weed removal to plant health and garden goals.

Discussion

Ask:

  • Why might a gardener remove weeds from around carrots?
  • Why might a gardener leave some wild plants in a different part of the yard?
  • Can a weed be useful to an insect or animal?
  • How can we make choices that help both our garden and nature?

Explain that removing weeds is not about saying a plant is “bad.” It is about managing space so selected plants can grow well. Some wild plants may provide food or shelter for pollinators, so gardeners can choose areas where they will be allowed to grow.

Cause-and-Effect Writing

Keatyn completes:

Activity Break 8: Garden Decision Cards

Time: 5–10 minutes

Read scenarios and have children move to a “remove,” “keep,” or “ask first” area.

  • An unknown plant is growing near a compost area.
  • A wildflower is growing in a pollinator garden.
  • A thorny plant is growing beside a path.

Children explain their decisions and identify any safety concerns.

Segment 9: How to Remove Weeds Safely

Time: 10–15 minutes

Purpose: Learn and practice a safe removal process.

I Do: Demonstrate

  1. Put on gloves.
  2. Identify the plant before pulling it.
  3. Loosen the soil if needed.
  4. Hold the weed near its base.
  5. Pull slowly and steadily so the root comes out.
  6. Use a trowel for a stubborn root, with adult supervision.
  7. Place the weed in a bucket or approved compost area.
  8. Fill the small hole if necessary and wash hands.

Explain: “Pulling slowly helps remove the root. If a piece of root remains, the weed may grow again.”

We Do: Practice Motions

Use craft sticks or pretend weeds in a tray of soil. Practice finding the base, loosening the soil, pulling gently, and sorting the plant.

Activity Break 9: Safe Gardening Relay

Time: 5–10 minutes

Children race against a timer—not each other—to complete the safe sequence with pretend plants: gloves, identify, loosen, pull, sort, wash. The focus is correct order, not speed.

Segment 10: Hands-On Weed Removal

Time: 10–15 minutes

Purpose: Apply identification and removal skills in a real setting.

Before Beginning

An adult marks the plants that should stay and points out which weeds are safe to remove. Do not let children remove unknown, poisonous, thorny, or irritating plants.

You Do: Garden Task

Keatyn removes a small number of confirmed weeds. She records:

  • Number of weeds removed
  • Approximate distance from the nearest useful plant
  • Whether the root came out
  • One change noticed after the area was cleared

Feedback

Give specific feedback, such as:

  • “You checked the plant before pulling it.”
  • “You held the weed near the base.”

Activity Break 10: Weed Count and Graph

Time: 5–10 minutes

Count the weeds removed from different areas. Create a simple bar graph using squares, tally marks, or blocks.

  • Which area had the fewest?
  • How many more weeds were in the largest group than the smallest group?

Segment 11: Reading and Following Directions

Time: 10–15 minutes

Purpose: Practice reading directions and sequencing.

Read these directions aloud, then have Keatyn put them in the correct order:

  • Check that the plant is a weed.

Purpose: Use math and planning to design a garden.

“Design a 24-inch garden row for 4 plants. Each plant needs at least 6 inches of space. Where will you place the plants?”

We Do: Plan Together

Mark a 24-inch line. Discuss whether plants should be placed at 0, 6, 12, and 18 inches or with equal spaces between their centers. Explain that a real seed packet gives the best spacing information for that plant.

You Do: Choose a Design

Keatyn chooses one:
