Short Vowel Sound Safari: CVC Word Fun
Materials Needed
- Letter cards: a, e, i, o, u and several consonants
- Picture cards or small objects: cat, bed, pig, fox, sun
- Five small cups, bowls, or paper circles labeled a, e, i, o, u
- Paper and crayons
- Optional: magnetic letters or letter tiles
Lesson Length
20–24 minutes
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:
- Say the short sounds for a, e, i, o, and u.
- Listen for the middle vowel sound in a CVC word.
- Read or build at least three simple CVC words, such as cat, pig, and sun.
- Sort simple CVC words by their short vowel sound.
Success Criteria
I can:
- Make the short vowel sound when I see a vowel.
- Stretch a word and listen for its middle sound.
- Put a word with the vowel group where it belongs.
Introduction: The Vowel Sound Safari — 3 Minutes
Hook: Say, “Today we are going on a vowel safari! We will listen for a special sound hiding in the middle of words. Can your ears find it?”
Show the five vowel cards and say:
- a says /ă/ as in apple.
- e says /ĕ/ as in egg.
- i says /ĭ/ as in igloo.
- o says /ŏ/ as in octopus.
- u says /ŭ/ as in up.
Use motions to make the sounds memorable:
- /ă/: pretend to hold an apple.
- /ĕ/: pretend to crack an egg.
- /ĭ/: make a tiny igloo shape with your hands.
- /ŏ/: make large octopus arms.
- /ŭ/: point up.
Body: Learn and Practice
1. I Do: Teacher or Parent Models — 4 Minutes
Explain: “CVC means consonant-vowel-consonant. The vowel is the middle letter. We can stretch the word to hear the middle sound.”
Model with cat:
- Point to each letter: c – a – t.
- Say each sound slowly: /k/ – /ă/ – /t/.
- Blend the sounds: cat.
- Ask, “What sound do you hear in the middle?” Answer: /ă/.
Repeat with one or two words:
- pig → /p/ – /ĭ/ – /g/ → middle sound /ĭ/
- sun → /s/ – /ŭ/ – /n/ → middle sound /ŭ/
Quick check: Say fox slowly. Ask, “What vowel sound is hiding in the middle?” The learner responds, “/ŏ/.”
2. We Do: Vowel Sound Echo Game — 4 Minutes
Say a short vowel sound and have the learner echo it with the matching motion.
Practice in a playful voice:
- Parent: “/ă/!” Learner: “/ă/!”
- Parent: “/ĕ/!” Learner: “/ĕ/!”
- Parent: “/ĭ/!” Learner: “/ĭ/!”
- Parent: “/ŏ/!” Learner: “/ŏ/!”
- Parent: “/ŭ/!” Learner: “/ŭ/!”
Next, say a word and stretch it. The learner holds up or touches the vowel card for the middle sound.
- map → /ă/
- bed → /ĕ/
- sit → /ĭ/
- hot → /ŏ/
- bug → /ŭ/
Think-pair-share option: In a classroom, children whisper the answer to a partner before sharing. At home, the learner can whisper the answer to a toy or stuffed animal.
3. We Do: Vowel Sorting Safari — 4 Minutes
Place the five vowel labels on the floor or table. Give the learner a picture, object, or word card.
For each card, guide the learner through these steps:
- Name the picture or read the word together.
- Stretch the word slowly.
- Listen for the middle vowel sound.
- Place the card beside the matching vowel.
Suggested words:
- a: cat, map, jam
- e: bed, hen, jet
- i: pig, sit, fin
- o: fox, log, hot
- u: sun, cup, bug
Say, “You found the vowel hiding in the middle!” after each correct sort.
4. You Do: Build and Read CVC Words — 4–5 Minutes
Give the learner letter cards or magnetic letters. Ask the learner to build and read three to five words.
Use these words:
- cat
- bed
- pig
- log
- sun
For each word, the learner should:
- Build the word from left to right.
- Touch each letter and say its sound.
- Blend the sounds to read the word.
- Tell which short vowel sound is in the middle.
Choice: The learner may build the words with letter cards, write them with crayons, or tap one finger for each sound.
Conclusion: Show What You Know — 3–4 Minutes
Exit Challenge
Say or show these three words: map, hen, fox. Ask the learner to:
- Say each word.
- Name the middle vowel sound.
- Place or point to the matching vowel card.
Ask:
- “What is a CVC word?”
- “Where do we find the vowel?”
- “What short sound does i make in pig?”
Finish with: “Today we listened for the vowel hiding in the middle of CVC words. We used the sounds to read words like cat, pig, and sun.”
Assessment
Formative Assessment
- Listen to whether the learner says each short vowel sound correctly.
- Ask the learner to identify the middle sound in spoken CVC words.
- Watch whether the learner blends three sounds to read a word.
- Notice whether the learner sorts words under the correct vowel.
Summative Assessment
The learner meets the lesson goal when they can correctly identify the middle vowel sound in at least 4 out of 5 CVC words and read or build at least 3 CVC words with support as needed.
Differentiation
For a Learner Who Needs More Support
- Practice only two vowels at a time, such as short a and short i.
- Use picture cards before asking the learner to read printed words.
- Stretch the word together and emphasize the middle sound.
- Use continuous tapping: one tap for each sound.
- Give two vowel choices instead of all five.
For a Learner Ready for More
- Ask the learner to think of another word with the same middle vowel.
- Have the learner change one letter to make a new word, such as cat to cot.
- Invite the learner to draw a picture and label it with a CVC word.
- Ask the learner to write a short sentence, such as “The pig is big.”
Optional Follow-Up Activity
During the day, play “Find the Vowel.” Choose a CVC word from a book, label, or conversation. Say it slowly together and ask, “What vowel sound do you hear in the middle?”
