Ask Wyett to imagine standing in a quiet mountain valley at dawn. A deep bugle echoes from the hills. A large animal moves through the grass, but the trees make it difficult to see. Ask:

Key Information

  • Elk: Large members of the deer family. Male elk are called bulls, females are cows, and young elk are calves.
  • Habitat: Elk need food, water, shelter, and enough space. They often use open meadows, forest edges, and wooded areas.
  • Cataloochee Valley: A mountain valley in the eastern part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Its fields and forest edges provide suitable elk habitat.
  • Reintroduction: Elk once lived in the southern Appalachian region but disappeared from the area because of hunting and habitat changes. Elk were reintroduced to the Great Smoky Mountains beginning in 2001.

Wyett chooses one of the following projects. Each option should include at least two reliable facts and one recommendation for visitors.
